I agree with you. I personally take a small drop of performance, and even a 30 % one over a giant furnace. Today computers are very performant, as much performant than supercomputers 15 years ago.
By now, for the majority of the users, the design and silence of the computer is more important than raw power.
...for home use
I guess as far as content creation goes, it can still be advantageous to have a good computer...although distributed computing may someday do away with that too...

Distributed computing is not an almighty solution. Some algorithms are extremely hard to be tweaked for allowing efficient use of SMP or clusters.
