Well, now that is a very refreshing idea, just on the matter of the appearance of the PowerBook. I would like to see these colours on the PowerMac, too. Yes, I have thought that a deep blue, or a black would be a good look for a few of the Macintosh computers. Going back to when the G4s came out, I called in to Apple to tell them this.

    I second the motion.

This afternoon I was sorting through some junk and found my old Z88 - 3.2Mhz Z80. Wrote a 3 page presentation on it just for retro kicks. If only it had better transfer hardware (it's only got a 9 pin serial port) I'd use it more. I had to dig up a PC as well to get my presentation off it. Ugh.

I'd forgotten how nice it is to lounge on the sofa and just type on something that weighs only 900g, doesn't get hot and has a 20 hour battery life from 4 AAs.

Not that I still don't lust after a dual 970MP for video transcoding and DVD creation. ;-)

So you would like a G3 notebook, that is PowerBook, or iBook? While not as retrograde as machines from more years ago, they run with less heat, yes? I never have had a laptop, however I have several 604 machines, and a blue G3, which ran quite cooly in its tower. The laptops, I would not know from experience. It is not in my ken, nothing laptop is. I have been thinking one would be useful to me, however.

Back to the theme of the thread, you figure that unless you are making use of final cut, one is as well off with the G4 notebooks? I thought Apple was wanting the low power requirements of some of the intel cpus. How long can an intel notebook last without a charge compared to a G4?

I've still got a G3 iBook 500Mhz. It's a great little thing. cool, small and quiet plus 4+ hours on a battery.

A large amount of the power requirements used by a laptop are in the screen and drives not the CPU. If you want that DVD burner or 7200rpm hard drive it's at the cost of battery. There's not that much difference between the newer G4 and Pentum-M if you're running reasonably CPU intensive tasks. If you're not however, the Pentium-M steps down to ridiculously slow speeds to consume power and fares better than the G4. Plus most PC laptops are also larger than Apple laptops and have larger batteries.

We'll see what the 7448 brings but Freescale were quoting about a third less max power consumed than the 7447A and revised power management. Apple already quote 4-5 hours for their laptops which ok, isn't 8-10 hours like some Centrino based machines but IME you also have to look at battery sizes and what you're doing. Quite often those 10 hour battery lives are only if you're sat there typing into notepad, not watching a DVD.

Most of the Centrino machines run DDR2 ram and much more evolved support chipsets than Apple has so there's power savings there too and of course many of those laptops don't have power hungry GPUs and extra VRAM.

If those things don't matter of course and 10 hours battery does then buy a Centrino...or a second apple battery for 50 quid off eBay.

I don't think he meant that he would like to relpace his newer stuff with his older stuff, just that the older stuff is perfectly usable for many things.

I can't get my wife to let me replace her 400MHz G3 B/W. I've upgraded the video, HD, memory, monitor, and networking over the years but she likes it. It's fine for her.

My 14 year old daughter who has just entered an art oriented high school on the other hand, is fairly up to date. She's been using my pro programs since she was 11. She has her own tablet, scanner, laser printer, digital camera, etc.

    Different strokes and all that.

    To the Messrs,

Thank you, gentlemen, for the information on the portables. I plan to go back some time to a 604 machine and run OS 7.6.1, or perhaps 7.5.3, or one of those, just to try to get that Easter Egg with the Cupertino campus and the Iguana, Iguana, Powersurgius flag.

Besides that, I want to try out a copy of Lightning Draw that I got one time. I haven't tried to install it on my dual 800 G4, with OS 9.2.2.

Things seem to become topsy turvy in the world of computers, with Apple planning to go to intel cpus, and microsoft seeming to go away from intel to IBM, for at least some of their chips, for their gaming.

Maybe you should try a less CPU hungry program. There - saved you a few thousand. ;-)

Citing unnamed sources, The Inquirer reports that Apple is looking to use Merom and Woodcrest -- codenames for Intel's next-generation dual-core 65 nanometer (nm) mobile and server chips -- to power Intel-based Macs that will debut next June. However, the chips, which are the successors to Yonah and Dempsey, are not scheduled for release until after the third quarter of the year.

As a result, Apple has been left with no option other than to pressure Intel into providing it the preferential treatment, but the world's largest chip maker isn't biting, the report says.

It's unclear if report is accurate, as Apple has made not official statement about which Intel processors will find their way into the first Intel Macs.

Recent mumblings have indicated that some Intel Macs could begin showing up long before June, possibly sporting a version of Intel's Yonah chip, which is due later this year.

Intel also recently said it is developing an unnamed ultra-low power version of its high-performance 65 nm logic manufacturing process that will allow it to produce significantly lower-power chips for laptops and small-form factor devices.

Haha thanks you just gave me fond memories of the old QuickDraw3D easter egg.
