It's quite simple. Your mouse gets low? You plug the firewire cable into the front of the mouse, and into the computer. You then continue using it as you would a wired mouse, as it charges.
You are so right. I've always thought it amazing that wireless/rechargable mice don't work this way. It is so damned obvious!
But here's another option...
Howabout storing the cord in the mouse itself. Flip open a panel on the back, pull out the standard apple mouse cord, plug in. With a bit of creative component arrangement, this is definately possible.
Why would anyone want to have to keep track of a charging dongle, extra cord, or spare batteries?
You know what this would also solve? Pairing/association of the wireless device. Simply plug it in and blammo, you're paired to that computer. Unplug and continue on if you wish. Or... simply do it the current way. But still, it seems so obvious.
With an internally stored cord, the one major hold-up to wireless mice will have been eliminated. No more running out of batteries... ever.

Well, if a new apple BT mouse is anything like the old, there would be little or no room for anything extra inside. And if they go from AA batteries to Lith ion, I would want them to make sure every mm of extra space is used for that.
Side the fact a mouse-stored cord would never be straight. It would be twisted in circles like a large phone cord.
I don't think it would be any harder to keep track of than, say, an iPod cord.
Good points. But it still seems possible to fit a fallback cord into a wireless mouse. Something goes wrong? Rip out the cord and you're good to go. This wouldn't preclude a charging dock for planned recharging overnight etc.
A wired/backup connection, would make the wireless mouse as reliable as a wired mouse... because in fact it would be both.
The hassles associated with wireless mice should not be underestimated. Once they are garaunteed to be reliable, we'll see them become the norm. Until then, most will continue to end up collecting dust in a drawer somewhere.
