Ok...Im really contemplating possibly upgrating my PM B&W G3 300mhz to a dual core 2.3, however I know the intels are a bit out (for the towers, that is), but does anyone think well see another PM update before then? Rumors etc?

We will see minor update. I don't think that you should expect huge speed bump, but a quad 2,3 is something worth considering. But I am not even sure for this one, because quad are watercooled, and this feature cost some bucks.
I fear that watercooled macs, will be only for the most expansive model.
I know anything I get will be a HUGE jump in performance from what I'am currently running, and I am familiar with the "if I need it, get it" reasoning, that people say in here, and am debating it back n forth in my head. My main concern is all of my main apps I use like PS etc are PPC and I really dont want to run rosetta with them, so the PPC mac is justifiable. Uggh, I feel like I should really wait for the Intels though...\
Hypoluxa, if my memory is correct the blue and white G3 300 is a six years old design ( I have one in my office with a G4 550 upgrade in case of need).
If you don't change your computer that much, I think that the dual 2,3 will be a good investissement for the 5 next coming years. Photoshop will be way much faster (from ten to one hundred times, for filter using altivec acceleration). So if all your applications are PPC based, take the dual.
In 5 years, the X86 transitions will be finish (or perhaps there will be an another transition ) and it will be time to take an intel powermac.
Personally I ordered a quad G5 : that way, this computer will fit my needs for the next coming years, preventing me to be an intel mac beta tester.

Yea, I dont change my computers (given that the mac I have is my first ever computer) that much, just upped the ram to the max on the G3, so the G5 would definately be a long term investment. The quad is tempting, but Im not keen on having liquid inside my computer... \

Apple use watercooling since the dual 2,5 ghz, and I did not read many complains about this. I think that it's reliable especially when we know that it was designed by Apple for it's workstations.

true, true.. Im thinking of the "just in case" scenerio as well, Apple does make good products, hence my long lasting use of my G3 case in point.
I wouldnt want to have a first generation intel mac running everything I own in emulation. By the time you need to upgrade from a dual 2.3, the mactel hardware will have come to age and all software will be native.

Well I think Im gonna do it, but with first seeing if I can get some parental support ie: making them guilty for not helping to pay a cent for my college ed, and see if they will go half on it. Since I can get a studnet discount and all... 8)

But the life for this water-unit is expectet to be 18 months, as far as what ive read. (All the discussion-babble just after release)
I initially thought you would upgrade your BW G3 with a dual-core upgrade card.. Yikes!

No, that is the guarranteed life. The guarranteed life of the computer is one year. These cooling systems are built by Delphi using automotive engine cooling technology. Automobile systems last for a decade or more in environments that are much harsher than any graphic artist's cubical.
Something else to think about is the intel macs will not run classic. I realize most people have completely abandoned all MacOS 9 cruft, but if you haven't then that should be something to consider.

Not the ones made by Delphi. Denso and Bosch systems last, but not Delphi ones.
The other thing is that car's systems require regular inspection and maintenance (even though it is claimed that they're maintenance free for 10 years). So this is a bad comparisons.
The cooling system on the PPC is simple and uses silicone based heat transfer fluid which doesn't conduct, so even in the even of a spill, nothing will happen. However, this is pretty unlikely because the system is not under much stress. I would be a lot more worried about HD failure.

Does Panther run well on that machine? How do you think Tiger would fair?
My only worry with the intel transition is that all my Mac's will eventually not be supported by mainstream software because universal binaries may or may not be distributed by companies a few years down the road. I know most people would jump my case and tell me that eventually, you have to get new hardware because everything goes out of date at some point.
But, then you show up on the board.
I see you, someone who has a Mac from long ago still going strong, and my concerns are justified because here you are using your mac years down the road.
Oh well, enough gloom and doom. Bring on my Intel iBook/and quad PM.

Panther runs quite well given my HW situation. I do have a gig of ram on my machine which I think really helps run the OS and my apps. The speed in which apps open are slower than what Im use to at work, (in which I run a G5 1.6 ), and window resizing is a bitch, like in Safari. PS CS, ILL CS, and InDsn CS all run ok, PS is sluggish when running filters on hi res images, but again my extra ram helps a tad with that, since I can allocate more to it. Its odd, at school in our labs we have G4's of varying speeds (none over a gig though ) with 10.4.2 on em and they run like crap,(get the beach ball a lot) in my opinion, but I think it is a ram issue and network problem from what the lab monitors have mentioned
Well Ive made the claim about the dual core 2.3 G5, and I may be eventually letting my old BW G3 here go into retirement and or give it to my sister...The more I use it the more it seems to be not as bad as far as resposivness within the finder etc... but with no major hiccups or problems with it, I think it still has a number yrs left. It is quite the trooper. My very first Mac/computer has done its job well.
