I was able to partition with mac utility 2 each with mac format journaled then the 3rd smaller (40gb) left free space for my dell, using super duper to copy my imac g3 to the iomega imac g3 partition, and will back up my ibook g4 to the iomega partition ibook g4. super duper will allow each to be bootable using firewire (they have a list of tested external HD that they know will work (seems my iomega is doing ok i quess) it's just slow 8.36MB/sec

will keep you up to date on this. but so far super duper is doing a super duper job--BUT i'll only know this if it crashes. but if my iomega is bootable i should be able to try booting from this drive and run programs, and connect to internet for trouble shooting right??

not sure if you mentioned this, have you tested booting from your one of your external drives? see how it goes? i know its not an exact simulation of your primary disk crashing, but there should be no harm playing around with booting from one of the external drives, and loading up programs and stuff (making sure you load the application off the drive you booted from not your usual mac drive).

may give you some peace of mind 8)

this is probably stupid question but how do you boot from that drive....in order to see my drive the coomputer has already booted to ox x, is there a setting that will allow my screen to show the backup drive but not boot up, then i can access the backup drive??

sorry i've never used a backup drive before now. this will also help me understand how to restore in case of a main HD crash. or in case of a main HD crash access internet for problem solving

now i did access the drive, used safari with no problem , worked with itunes etc and consolidated my library with no noticible problem but it may be a bit slower.

    thanks for the patients.

yeah no worries as you probably figured out (i'll mention it here for people new to the mac) hold down Option when booting up the mac then you can choose which drive to boot from

i used superduper, on my g3 it worked at 3-5MB/sec and on my g4 8-12MB/sec why??

also now that i did this (very easy to partition with disk utility) then use SD, now can i update any new changes to the native HD using backup 3 or stay with super duper and spend the $$$ to register it??

i guess the g4 is faster in general so copying files (which uses cpu as well as the firewire bus) will be faster... also your hard disk in the g4 is probably faster than your hard disk in the g3...

my thinking is if you like super duper, better to stick to that and use its "smart update" rather than backup 3. because super duper will know what files to keep updated whereas as far as i know with backup 3 you have to choose which files and folders you want to update. also less of a headache, when you use one simple update package (super duper).

on my pc and iBook i do a lot of manual backup of folders and cd burning, it can get troublesome at times. the easier a backup is, the more likely you will backup frequently.
