It really really shouldn't be that hard to find a phone with 802.11b or even DUN. As for the locking/unlocking, why is it necessary? They subsidize the phone when getting a contract yes, but they also charge rather exorbitantly for cancelling a contract too. What's there to protect? These are the less ugly things about the carriers. The number one problem is billing.
THT is 100% right here. These points probably only apply to the US, true. Love Steve's comment about the carriers being "orifices". Maybe VOIP will sweep these monster leeches from the marketplace, but with their lock on the political system, it's doubtful.
