This exemplifies the feat which Apple have pulled off. Everyone thinks H.264 is H.264 is H.264, and therefore QuickTime 7 is great 'cos it's got H.264. Unfortunately, this is not so, and QuickTime fails miserably to demonstrate the full capabilities of this codec.

I don't know about MPEG1 and 2, but certainly MPEG4-part2 and H.264 (which is MPEG4-part 10) both specify a set of "profiles". With MPEG4 there is "simple profile" and "advanced simple profile", and with H.264 there is "baseline profile", "main profile", "extended profile", and "high profile".

"advanced simple profile" (of part 2) and "high profile" (of part 10) are the two profiles that fully implement each of the standards. The lower profiles remove some of the specifications to make the codec less complex and therefore cheaper to implement and less compute-intensive to execute. Apple only ever implemented MPEG4-part2 "simple profile" (and that implementation itself was not very good), and so far have only implemented up to "main profile" of H.264 (and that implementation is exceptionally slow relative to other "main profile" implementations).

    Suggested reading:

H.264 (if you don't feel like reading the whole thing, scroll down a bit and there's a section on profiles.)

    MPEG4-part2

The doom9 forums are a brilliant place to learn more about video codecs. This (very long) thread, and this thread make sobering reading for any Apple fan.
