Why am I hearing this in 2006?

When/if the argument comes up that there's "no software" available for Macs, I tell people that MS Office, Photoshop, Quicken, and many others have Mac versions. Often, these ignoramouses are surprised by that alone.

They usually, then, argue that there's so much more software available for Windows. My response to that is that unlike the Windows platform where there's a zillion crappy programs for one topic, there's a few pretty good programs on the same topic for a Mac.

Honestly, it is dumb that we're still hearing that. And for the first time, I agree with Placebo.

Oh, and lundy, I have another ignorant statement, unfortunately it's from my father: "Apple screwed themselves over because they didn't strike a deal with IBM in the 80's." He's trying to convince me that they should have done what Gates did? Holy crap.

I see a problem for one with Windows Media Player not being developed anymore for the Mac. I have gone to a few websites where video will not play back at all. Shortly, nothing will play on WMV9 for the Mac.

This is a problem and I frankly believe that Apple should have done something to prod Microsoft to continue updating it.

Someone just buying their first mac and seeing a problem like a video not playing on a website would start to feel anxious and its understandable.

I'll add the piss-poor performance of Safari. I'm starting to feel like I'm on dial-up with all the hang time.

Have you checked out the latest version of Flip4Mac? It was recently announced that they also support live streams.

Flip4Mac is now a Microsoft product.

True, but that is the fault of the website operators who stupidly choose to use the proprietary WMP rather than the cross-platform QuickTime. Simple as that. Or even better, simple MPEGs. Why a website would deliberately choose to exclude 35 million users is beyond my comprehension.

Microsoft now owns flip4mac? They also own virtualPC. Am I the only one seeing something sinister in this?

I agree with you 100% about using MPGs only. Why use WMP when it sucks and is not comp[atible with everything? I always tell websites they lost a customer by using it.

Officially sanctioned perhaps but MS don't own it.

Ignorance is often the reason or the whole 'platform' thing that some techs buy into but also some sites are now using WMP10's DRM for streaming content. Apple don't have a licensable DRM format that websites can use. QTSS doesn't support DRM. And Flip4Mac doesn't support Windows DRM.

The whole DRM mess is going to get worse until someone mandates a compatible DRM standard. In the meantime Apple are going to lose out to Windows DRM for people that need licensable content protection.

That is what I thought too. The only question was why it suddenly became free the moment Microsoft "blessed" it. Are they providing some cash and development support? I am curious if it would be in Microsoft's best interest to get F4M to support the DRM.

It's probably good business for Flip4Mac's creators as the free version is somewhat limited and you have to buy upgrades to be able to convert to other formats.

It'd be nice if they can get it installed by default by as part of the Quicktime installation. It would help with novice user's video compatibility gripes.

I think hell will have to freeze over again before Apple agrees to let WMA/WMV play in QuickTime. Their goal, rightly so, is to wipe out WMA, or at least not let it take over like everything else MS bundles with the Windows OS. So far, with the iTMS, Apple has not only gotten the Trojan horse QuickTime onto every iTunes PC, but their 80% of the download market relegates WMA to the 60 or so iPod-wannabes and Napster etc. that make up the other 20%.

Since Apple barely makes any money on the iTMS itself, hopefully it is only a matter of time until the WMA download services (most of whom won't even allow you to log in with a Mac) start to run out of venture capital and fold.
