The MBP will have too many hardware problems for me to buy the 1st generation ones. Hence why i am waiting. Typical apple, release a beta level first then fix it in the update. Such bollocks.
Correction: some MBPs have too many hardware problems. I thought the same thing. A few hours into it, however, and I couldn't be happier. And while there are substantial complaints regarding substaintial problems, there are those units (and I'd argue a majority) that function perfectly.
And when I say perfectly, I mean perfectly. If you can wait, nevertheless, I'd do it: you never know what small additions will show up in a Rev. B and make it a slightly better model.
For me, though, I needed a laptop and this has gone above and beyond the call

Not insult intended, but this is an apple site, hide the crapness by saying its good, doesnt work for me.
Sound problems (crackling...)
Processor noise
Screen problems (low brightnes)
Heat (hot hot hot)
Magsafe (can Buuuurrrn)
And the typical apple array of rubbish like things not aligning properly and the disks failing too easily.

Fair enough, you're entitled to your own interpretation of the complaints that I admit are out there. On a related note, I had a buddy of mine over (who's an owner of a recent Powerbook--not sure which rev) and he remarked that the speakers were amazingly crisp compared to Apple's old speakers, and that the screen was much brighter, even approaching the cinema display-quality that Apple claims.
I haven't used it enough for it to get too heated, and I'll let you know what happens with the MagSafe. Processor noise hasn't shown up yet, but it may in the near future, so I'll update if that happens (or if any of the other quirks show themselves).
I was nervous about all the problems that people had posted on discussions.apple.com. But then mine arrived, and it's just perfect.
Sound problems (crackling...) - Nope.
Processor noise - Yes, and this was the one that really worried me. But easily fixable, at a minimal cost in battery life. No big deal.
Screen problems (low brightnes) - Nope.
Heat (hot hot hot) - Erm, I wouldn't use it extensively on my bare lap, but even my old iBook gets uncomfortable after a while. It doesn't get so hot that it's uncomfortable or dangerous to pick up. Not a big deal.
Magsafe (can Buuuurrrn) - Neither my Magsafe nor my power brick get hot.
Your milage will vary, but I think the only genuine issue that is real and universal is the processor buzz, and from what I've read on the forums there's likely nothing Apple can do about it short of stopping the processors from going into deep sleep - i.e. doing exactly what the quick fix does. So this isn't a "flaw", so to speak, just the way modern processors are. Otherwise, the MBP is beautiful, fast, and just all-around perfect.
Update: Slashdot posted an article about MBP issues that references a DailyTech posting which says that "revision D" MBP motherboards fix many of the issues that MBP owners have experienced. I checked my serial number, and I indeed have a Rev D (W8611 and up). So maybe my happy experience is only typical of very recent buyers, but maybe Apple has actually addressed the original issues.
i didnt mean the power brick. i ment the magsafe connecter itself. there have been a few incedents where it hasnt been properly connected and has melted.
I realise that the screen is bright, that isnt the problem. the problem is how badly it deals with low brightness.
Sound - maybe i misinterpreted that one, i am sure that there was a complaint about sound somewhere...
Processor Noise - how is it easily fixable (i mean seriously how?)
Heat - If it gets hot then it is a big deal, if the laptop gets that hot and it ISNT vented through the fans but though the underside, then that is a problem.
Still on top of all that its a new product and i am sure there are other mistakes. Apple allways makes disk mistakes on new models.
I aint trying to slag MBP i can see they are good. I am just saying that i am waiting till their next update, when all the problems are fixed, they understand the hardware better AND there will be several improvements and when universal applications are out. By then the MBP should be apple perfect like my G5 imac. Until then, for me, i aint switching.

How do you reconcile these two points?
