Suffice to say Apple actually does a tablet! What will it look like?

Right off the bat let's leave the Newton out of this one!

If apple does a new Tablet (iTablet, MacTablet or whatever)

No doubt minimal and sleek! Here's some scetches from a recent apple patent, looks like a tablet to me!

But what will it actually look like??

    My prediction:

Flat, rectangular, screen on one side.

    You heard it here first!

What I would expect (or at least what I would want) would be, basically a MacBook Pro with a swivel/touch screen. It would have all of the features of the MacBook too.

Apple couldnt make something like that without it breaking too easily. If anything moves on apple products you can be sure after two uses something odd will happen. i.e. imac foot and really unsmooth laptop lides.

Careful there, Kick. You are playing kind of fast and loose with your NDA.

re: Swivel display, I've seen several of Wintel swivel tablets and feel Apple will shy away from this design. It is definitely nice to have a keyboard, but the design is clunky. Apple could no doubt improve the aesthetics and ingenuity of the hinge (vis the desklamp iMac arm), but it's still a major moving part that also adds thickness/weight due to shell on backside of LCD.

Based on those patent pics (link?), and the rumor of touch keyboard patents, my guess is a flat slate with a full screen covering one entire side, just like the video iPod designs people are brainstorming.

The keyboard would be a dock item (or equiv) that overlays as a window for tapping right onscreen.

Inasmuch as those drawings were from a design patent, that pretty much means it has to look exactly like that.

I hope it's something like this that releases a keyboard rather than the iPod wheel. It should also be able to fold at the bottom hinge where the keyboard is, and you use it like a laptop.

Who wants a fragile wheel? That won't happen and it shouldn't happen.

What's the niche? For the tablet. Apple doesn't send something out the door without a target market. Either the tablet will cannibalize/replace a current product's market or seek to create a new one. Where do y'all see a tablet fitting?

    Which niche do you want?

    Educational?

How about the MacPad, with a 13.3" widescreen interactive touchscreen LCD display?

Sys Admins? Journalists? Anyone & everyone?

I present the MacPad mini, which is my personal favorite:

    [deadhorse mode]

    8" widescreen multi-touch LCD

1.06GHz ULV Core Duo CPU w/2MB shared cache

    533MHz FSB

    512MB NAND flash memory

    2GB DDR2 SDRAM (two SO-DIMM slots)

    32GB 1.8" FlashRAM HDD

    Intel GMA950 integrated GPU

    WUSB (wireless USB)

    AirPort Extreme

    BlueTooth

    Quad band cell capabilities

    Pivoting iSight camera

    stereo BlueTooth headset w/microphone

    Stylus

About the size of a DVD case (which is really close to a 16:10 ratio) and half again as thick...

    US$666

    Happy 30th Birthday Apple Computer

    [/deadhorse mode]

And finally, for the graphics artists, the digital content creators, the creative professionals I present?

The MacPad Pro, with a 17"+ widescreen interactive touchscreen LCD display?

Now the real trick will be for Apple to make the right choice and have the tablets function like the old PowerBook Duos?

Use it on the go, bring it home/work and dock it in, gaining storage space, optical drives, larger monitor by connection to the dock, etc. ?

    Maybe even more CPUs?

    Mmm?

You make my point eloquently. The topic of the discussion is "What will it look like?" The answer will be guided by the niche. Educational? Must be durable and interface fetures for young children are better, larger, maybe more colorful too. Journalists? Smaller, more pda-like. Graphic artists? More precise, stylish, and bigger.
