It will be interesting to see what Apple does with Price on the MacBook. They certainly have room with the high MacBook Pro prices to make the MacBook more expensive.

What are the chances that the new MacBooks will have swivel screens??

    here's a link to a pic of a swivel screen http://www.naplestech.com/shopcart/p...tails1_600.jpg

I really like the concept and I know Apple could do it but will they?

That said, new question: would those of you who strongly dislike IG be willing to see the price of the entry-level MacBook be bumped up to $1299 if it included a Core Duo (like rumors suggest) and dedicated graphics?

It's not an either/or situation. Apple can make a welfare edition core solo, 128MB ram integrated POS for education, and heck, price it at $849. Then have a wildly popular iBook with Core Duo and Radeon x1300 or better for $1199 or more.

Apple has more hardware options now, not less. I'd guess an education Macbook would have an ultra-low-voltage core and integrated graphics for battery life, if nothing else, like, say, price.

Honestly, I expect Apple will wow us with these new iBooks. Whether it be with form factor or features (likely) or price (unlikely), we will be amazed.

What I'd absolutely love to see is this:

    $799-899 MackBook

    13.3" Widescreen

    1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor

    512MB memory (Expandable to 2GB)

    40GB 4200rpm HD

    Combo Drive

    Intel GMA950 64MB shared

Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

    Built in iSight

    Apple Remote

    $1099 MacBook

    13.3" Widescreen

    1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor

    512MB memory (Expandable to 2GB)

    60GB 5400rpm HD

    SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)

    Intel GMA950 128MB shared

Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

    Built in iSight

    Apple Remote

    $1499 MacBook

    13.3" Widescreen

    1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor

    512MB memory (Expandable to 2GB)

    80GB 5400rpm HD

    SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory

Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

    Built in iSight

    Apple Remote

But I don't think apple would go for that. I think that would cover education, basic config as well as a 12" Power Book replacement.

However I think this is more realistic:

    I agree 98% with you

I think the high end MacBook will have the X1300 with 256MB GDDR3 memory and I also believe it will have a BTO option for the processor so you can upgrade it to 1.83GHz Core Duo.

Besides that I like the way you think 8)

$400 more for a dedicated GPU and 20G gain in the HD seems kinda steep.

That keeps the 1099 model from canabalizing the 799 model. 200 more for dedicated GPU and bigger HD as well as going duo would kill the 799-899 model I created.

Only schools would probably buy that.

That'd be sick lets hope apple smartens up and realizes there are more gpus available to them and that a little more bto never hurt anybody.

Does anyone have info on Apple's stock levels on the iBook G4? The Apple Store seems to have plenty. Once the new ones are out they would have to discount the old ones a plenty to unload them I would think.

I really don't see apple doing a $799 macbook with the same specs as the $599 mini. It would be great if Apple did this for the education market, but I doubt it.

While reading an article about Intel's plans for the new Core Duo introduction and price reductions for the existing lineup of Core Duo CPUs that Apple may well be syncing the introduction of the MacBook with that event. Indeed they could be producing the laptops *without* CPUs awaiting the price markdowns (thought to be around $200 per CPU). They could then install the CPUs and hard drives and have a ready to go supply of MacBooks for shipment. Doing this would allow them to keep the expensive components out until the last moment (which is the normal way of things in the aircraft business...the engines and avionics go onto the airframe very late in the assembly process and results in considerable cost savings to the manufacturer.

This would allow Apple to use the Core Solo for the entry level MacBook and the ("old") Core Duo (edit) for the top of the line MacBook and install the new Core Duo in the MacBook Pro keeping their treasured differentiation of product lines.

Apple is nothing if not cost conscious.

Funny thing tonight, when the guy at the apple store asked me "anything else I can help you with tonight" and I said "New iBooks tomorrow?" he turned crimson....and stammered, "I I guess we'll have to see what happens tomorrow!"

The employees usually don't know anything, but his reaction was unusual.

I don't think personally we'll see anything for a couple of weeks yet. Tomorrow would be nice.

And on the color theme, I'll be Apple will come out with either white or black first and then new colors over a few weeks to milk the publicity to the fullest!!
