Oh I'm still buying Watson though. $30 is pretty much nothing in the scheme of things and I think Watson will develop faster with more plugins than Sherlock III. At least I'm betting on it.
I do find it strange that Karelia is using Apple UI Guidlines better than Apple. I'm starting to dislike the brushed alum look.
I read in an interview from the Watson developers that the program itself is a port from another piece of software that's based on some sort of open standards (no, not HTML). Unfortunately I can't remember where the hell I read it.
Anyway, the point is, Watson isn't even the original and Sherlock most likely rests on top of whatever this standards are as well. Sorry I can't be more specific, my point is just that I don't think Apple is stealing the idea.
Honestly, I don't feel bad for Watson at all. First, Watson is just taking off of Apple's idea w/ Sherlock--the same base idea, a search program that does common internet tasks. Just Watson did more. Watson didn't even try to get it's own name--you all know that Dr. Watson is Sherlock Holmes' sidekick, right? WHen I saw Watson (which included Apple's internet icon in it), I thought it was just a newer version of Sherlock. Finding out it was from a different company, I felt that Watson copied from Sherlock.
Moreover, once you have the basic idea down, it's not coming up with new ideas, it's implementing them. All of Watson's features are really just similar ideas--more redundant internet activities to automate. It's just that Watson has them out before Apple, they're nothing really innovative.
The products were compared to art. The only art was the concept for Sherlock 2 back in Classic Mac OS to use simplify common internet tasks. After that ideas layed down, it's real easy to think of more tasks to program. Honestly, try it--what task do you do that isn't done for you? That takes almost no effort. The only thing Watson did was take Apple's idea and add to it a bit in less than creative ways. Now Apple took their idea back so that people don't have to pay extra for it, and their compared to Microsoft.
When Microsoft made Internet Explorer to knock off Netscape, they hadn't already invented the entire concept except for a few basic features. They just ripped it off. Apple has done most of the work for Sherlock AND Watson...
Really, the only thing Watson has going for it is the Aqua interface.

Sorry for not mentioning this in my previous post....
For all the people complaining about the pictures of sherlock 3 and how unfinished it looks, remember that it IS unfinished. expect it to be very nicely polished by the time it's released.

Oh that's what we said with the Cheetah developer releases
Two points: Apple may be in their right, legal and moral, to make their own version of Watson. But from their own interest it would have been a good idea to buy it from the author. It would encourage others in the future to make stuff like that and bring us great software that Apple could choose to buy and include or not. Watson may seem like the next step in the evolution from Sherlock but evolution doesn´t have a final end point, so if Watson hadn´t been there to inspire Apple I really don´t thing Sherlock III would be so Watson-like.
2): Can you program plug ins for Sherlock III? Our online travel plans, yellow pages etc. wouldn´t be included in Sherlock so it would be nice to have the opportunity to include functions relevant to other persons than US citizents.
