Hackers deface Apple's Korean online store

A hacker claiming to be of Turkish descent successfully gained access to and modified Apple Computer's Korean online store last week, according to a report by Silicon.com.

The hacker, who identified himself as "Dinam," defaced a portion of the Mac maker's online store by breaching a Mac OSX server running the popular Apache Web server software, reports says.

The defacement -- which reportedly took the form of a dozen lines of code posted to the apple.co.kr homepage -- was documented on hacker forum zone-h.org.

Apple is said to have removed the defacement from its Web site shortly after Silicon.com alerted the company. However, the Mac maker has subsequently refused to comment on the matter.

Although the hacker was likely after little more than "self-gratification" through vandalising the site, Apple should communicate what happened to its customers to end speculation, Jason Hart, CEO of security company Whitehat UK, told the publication.

"The worst thing Apple can do is not tell customers what has happened. It's like all the big companies though -- they're constantly having to defend themselves as they're being probed all the time," Hart added.

A online mirror of the hack appears to have vanished. Meanwhile, on Wednesday a hacker going by the name "Davidu" claimed to have breached one of Apple Korea's online mail servers.

Perhaps Apple should stop using Apache, and write their own web server.

That would be a bit much to say in this case without more information, though I doubt that would be forthcoming. I don't see any information showing whether it was Apache at fault, poor management or bad third party software that was installed on the server. Usually, it is faulty third party software or faulty management.

zone-h.org is not a "hacker forum", its an IT security website that keeps track of defacements.

See http://www.zone-h.org/en/bwhat (or just read the site, its clear)

It is also a great way to advertise one's skills. Big software companies (not to mention governments) hire ex-hackers all the time for the skills and ingenuity that they possess... takes a hacker to battle a hacker...

They should switch their Web hosting to Macs. I hear they are more secure.

Perhaps they could learn to waste their time making inane comments on computer-industry-rumor message boards like the rest of us, eh? Obviously more productive.

It's a slightly more-dangerous-than-usual hobby essentially. Who has time for anything that's not work?
