    It's Official: PS3 launching worldwide November 2006

[UPDATE] Sony confirms delay for next-gen console, says it will support an Xbox Live-like online gaming service; console will require a 60GB Linux HDD--but will it be sold separately?

By Tor Thorsen, Brendan Sinclair, Henry Niizumi, GameSpot

    Posted Mar 14, 2006 11:07 pm PT

TOKYO--Today at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutagari made it official--the PlayStation 3 has been delayed. The news confirmed widely circulated Japanese newspaper reports, which said that the delay was due to copyright-protection problems with the next-generation console's Blu-ray drive. For his part, Kutaragi would say only that the delay was due to "Blu-ray spec finalization."

Kutaragi told the crowd at the event that the PS3 would now launch in November 2006 worldwide. That dispelled fears that the console would make it to Japan by the fall but would miss the all-important holiday shopping season in the US and Europe. In fact, Kutaragi explicitly told the crowd of game retailers and journalists present that the PS3 would arrive before Thanksgiving in all territories.

Besides announcing the delay, Kutaragi made official another widely reported aspect of the PS3. He said that Sony is indeed preparing an Xbox Live-like online gaming service for the console, which would be called the "PlayStation Network Platform." Though he was short on specifics, the executive did say that currently Sony planned the "basic service"--which will allow online gameplay--will be "free." He also went on to outline the service in a fair amount of detail.

While the simultaneous tri-territory PS3 scheme may sound much like Microsoft's international launch of the Xbox 360, Sony plans to avoid the shortages that befell its competitor. Kutaragi said that the company plans on producing at least 1 million units of the console each month in order to keep the supply channel full. He said the goal was to ship 6 million PS3s worldwide by March 2007.

[UPDATE] The SCE president also told the crowd that the PS3 would use a 60GB 2.5-inch hard disc drive (HDD). A slide show during the presentation said the HDD would be loaded with the Linux operating system instead of Microsoft's Windows OS. The show also said it could be used as a "home server," could be directly connected to the Internet, and would be fully "upgradable."

Anyways I know the only next Geneartion system I'm going to buy is the Nintendo Wii, I've been seeing the E3 coverage on G4 and Metroid Prime 3, Zelda and Mario Galaxy look amazing

Plus they have a few other games that look really good 8)

Oh and has anyone else read this??

E3: CodeWarrior is Nintendo Wii's official toolset

    By Peter Cohen

Nintendo and Freescale Semiconductor have announced that the venerable CodeWarrior development environment is the official toolset for Nintendo?s forthcoming Wii console.

Freescale?s Radix technology powers the CodeWarrior tools chosen by Nintendo. Radix is billed as ?a lightweight c++ framework? with a modular architecture. It features editing, debugging and code browsing, XML-based project management, a scriptable workflow, Windows-native user interface, multi-display support and hot-swappable plug-ins. It also ships with a PowerPC compiler.

Could this eventually lead to a union between Apple and Nintendo... I doubt it but I wish it would happen

Microsoft is hedging its bets. It has, in effect, created a little Apple inside Microsoft with the Xbox group. The Xbox team shunned Windows and wrote its own operating system and user interface, and built its own hardware. (The new Xbox was even developed using Macintosh computers.)

I am just wading through the G4 E3 coverage - nobody in this thread has made any mention of the new non-boomerang controller for the PS3 that has a six degree position sensor (like the Wii's controller). They had it controlling an airplane game - you just moved the controller around in space without using the buttons or joysticks to controll the airplane. Admittedly this looks like a last minute rip-off of a nintendo idea, but I think that it is a great one that will be used in many games - it could make driving games much more accessable by allowing you to use the controller more like a steering wheel.

    The new PS3 controller doesn't have position-sensing, only tilt-sensing.

Looks cool anyway, I liked the demo they did with the tilt-sensing and Warhawk.

It's them following Nintendo's lead, but tilt-sensing in controllers has been around since the 1990s. I remember my father-in-law buying a Microsoft Sidewinder controller around 1999 and it came with this gimmicky Motocross game that you could use the Sidewinder's tilt functions in.

Yah the tilt feature was added a few weeks before E3. Or at least that is when the devolpers of Warhawk (the game you saw) got the info about it.

Also I think I have decided to buy 3 PS3's and sell 2 of em on ebay make some money and then go and buy a Wii. I shoulda done that w/ my 360...

Looks like I will be getting all 3 consoles this time around. Not sure how much use I will get out of the PS3 though...

By the way wasn't there some controversial thing about the duel-shock controller of Sony's?

It does look amazing. I'm always skeptical with Sony, whether or not something is being played real-time or if it is a complete fake. They've misled on that before.

No doubt it's likely to be the #1 graphics performer of the next generation.

Here is a followup to my previous "Linux on a PS3" comments - Sony is encouraging home-brew linux games on the PS3:

    http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...php?story=9290

If you pay the game royalties, you get access to level 1 of the Kernel - otherwise you don't pay anything and just use the Linux interfaces (which are built on the lower performance level 2 Kernel).

It looked too insane but then again that was just a movie trailer style fmv, even the ps2 can make extremely nice ones. The true test will be the in game graphics.

I'm glad they got rid of the force feedback on the PS3 controller. I always turned it off anyway. It also lightens the controller.

I can't play anymore w/o force feedback. It just losses much of the games feel.

Assassins Creed was the only kind of interesting game I saw for the PS3 at E3. Most of it's games are all sequals who have long since been worn out (FFXII...wow when will it be the FINAL fantasy?). Still Assassins Creed looked much like a Ninja Gaiden+Oblivion. Kind of an odd mix IMO but lets see how it works out. Now (mainly for Assassins Creed) I am thinking about camping out at BestBuy for the PS3, buy 3 of them, sell two on ebay, and use some of that money to buy a Wii. ha win-win situation...except I lose a night's sleep.

Don't use final fantasy or it's numbers in your aguements about sequels, it doesn't help your arguement at all and just makes it look like you don't know what your talking about.

Final fantasy games are never the same, story wise, character wise, and these days even gameplay wise. They switch it up pretty often and since it's the ps3 your talking about final fantasy XIII looks to be the most different from the others.

Your aguement has a certain weight to it but final fantasy is just a bad example.

And no I'm not an over-protective fanboy I've only ever played through 1 final fantasy game in my life.

I saw the coverage of the PS3 at E3. I am most unimpressed, all Sony had is great looking video. If the console is coming out in 4 months they need to be showing some actual gameplay.

I just read a quote from the CEO of Activision that said that the first

generation of PS3 games are only using about 20% of Cell's full

    potential.

    Story Here.

Games like Warhawk, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Assasins Creed, & Lair

look awesome already. I can't even begin to imagine what they would

    look like x5.

I have NO sympathy for PS3 video game programmers. Seriously. . . consult out a bunch of people used to working with FPGAs so they can teach the programmers how to program concurrent processes.

On that note, it's pretty wild to think that the next programming languages will inevitably be borrowing ideas from VHDL/Verilog.

Ok so FF wasn't the BEST example but still, after about a few of them it was just all too much alike. I know the gameplay and story and characters change each time but IMO it doesn't change enough.

Now games like GT and even GTA are getting old. The new GT adds a few cars and puts it in HD? How is that a new game? Forza 2 is going to blow it away it seems. GTA I have never liked, but it is quite a repatitive game, IMO. After playing a few hours it seemed like I would kill some people or steal some car, get chased by the cops, maybe kill a few of them, lay low for a bit so that they cops stop and repeat.

Yes, I am more inclined for the 360 even though I was once a hardcore PS fan. I really think Sony screwed over the PS2 by releasing videos that looked awesome but not gameplay and over-hyping their engine. For the PS2 it was the "emotion-engine" which was supposedly going to be amazing. Now it is the cell, which does look impressive but you must wonder just how great it is.

So far, partially because it is new to the world of gaming, the Xbox has not made all too many mistakes. Some marketting mistakes and such but they havn't just released videos to make it look amazing and have people pissed at them later.

Sony May Prohibit PS3 Preowned Game Sales

    Tuan Nguyen - May 24, 2006 7:22 PM

No more used games selling, for anyone

For the longest time, console gamers have had the luxury of selling their old games back to stores or to individuals for cash. Of course, the cash earned would be going towards buying new games. Players get to play the latest games, and also recoup some money after they've completed the game. In many instances, a preowned game can gain back a good percentage of what the gamer originally paid for -- depending on how recent the game is.

Games Radar reported today "High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought." However, neither Games Radar nor DailyTech were able to confirm the announcement with Sony.

At E3, Sony did announce it had plans to change all this with its PlayStation 3 console. During the PS3 keynote Sony announced that it would be changing the way it sells games. In fact, Sony said that it will no longer sell games but rather sell licenses to play the games. This means that if someone were to purchase a PlayStation 3 game, they would only be purchasing a license to play that game. Sony will retail ownership of the physical game media.

Gamespot has a follow up to the Games Radar article, with a comment from a Sony Europe PR manager claiming "PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console." However, no Sony representatives have made any statements as to whether or not the sale of preowned games will be discouraged, as originally claimed by Games Radar.

    Sad, very sad...

Yeah, porn isn't actually an accurate predictor of future formats. It won once, with VHS, because VHS was cheaper.

People just like to repeat that story because it's fun to talk about porn. In a ten-year-old kind of way.

I take it you haven't heard of Windows Media?

Bane of every Mac porn aficionado's existence. Every time I find a good porno, it has to be "Not Authorized for this computer" or some crap in Windows Media Player. Ugh and now this Flip4Mac business...It's hard for us Mac porn connoisseurs!

But I digress...$600 for a console!???!!! WTF!? Wiiiii!
