Reality Distortion field. It's the field some people think Steve Jobs gives off when announcing something to make a product or idea seem more than it really is or the best thing since sliced bread.

    wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reality_distortion_field

Reality distortion field (RDF) is both slang and computer industry jargon. The term was coined by Bud Tribble at Apple Computer in 1981 to describe company co-founder Steve Jobs' charisma and its effects on the developers working on the Mac project; by making them believe in what they were doing, enormous amounts of work were put in to bring the project to fruition. Later, the term was used to refer to devoted Macintosh users and others. RDF is the idea that Steve Jobs is able to convince people to believe almost anything with a skillful mix of charm, charisma, slight exaggeration, and clever marketing.

One particularly interesting effect of RDF is that it distorts an audience's sense of proportion or scale. Small advances are applauded as breakthroughs. Interesting developments become turning points, or huge leaps forward. The idea of RDF focuses less on outright deception and more on warping powers of judgment.

The term is sometimes extended to other managers and leaders in the high-tech industry, who try to convince their employees to become passionately committed to projects, sometimes without regard to the overall product or to competitive forces in the marketplace. In many instances, RDF is considered more self-delusional than effective.

Think of it as "spin" in the tech industry.

And don't forget about the new RDF v3.0 generator that goes online tomorrow in NYC?

Should cover most of the Eastern seaboard, and penetrate inland almost to the edge of the Central timezone?

I thought it was worth a smiley, too. Seems that you are not in an area affected by the RDF.

Apple is working on a satelite transmitter capablae of reaching hemispheres at a time.

RDF is an affliction rampant on these boards, so prepare yourself... you will be assimilated.

Once the Apple smartphone comes out, every single user will be a link in the RDF distribution chain?

Ok lets not go crazy. RDF is a made up term, for people with lets say, less than a full self identity. The fact is that apple makes cool products, with cool software, and they try to pay attention to every last detail. Aiming for near perfection. So out of that grows a certain respect and admiration for their products from their customers. Apple happens to be one of the few companies that actually listens to it's customers, while also giving them things that they didn't realise they wanted or needed.

Conclusion: They make cool stuff, that has a habit of not breaking because of they attention they pay to those details. The reality is the RDF doesn't exist, and it does exist

RDF is a term used by those who are unable to create. They think someone who creates is doing so via dirty tricks.

There is truth behind spin, but it is still spin.

The RDF is spin and Jobs does it very well.

Er.. That's called intention. The intention to do it despite any counter intetion.

So was is the definition of spin? Saying it's like this or like that is not a definition. A definition defines the thing itself.

Wikipedia's definition calls spin "a heavily biased portrayal in one's own favor of an event or situation." That's exactly what Steve Jobs does with Apple's products and services. We call it the Reality Distortion Field.
