Web browsing speed != quality of 'internet access'.

TWO Major Net probs w/ Mac

    1. some sites require sending you .exe files for setting up a web site - problem I came to..

    2. AVI files in quikctime - unreliable to say the least ....need DiVX addd-on etc- klanky - not what I bought a mac for..

Apart from that .. NO Problemo...

Macs just Work , Pcs just dont.

.avi isn't supported in quicktime. this is windows media player territory.

you're talking about downloading movies, which is not at all related to the internet browsing experience on a mac. guess what- on a pc, to view divx encoded avi movies (which is what you're talking about) you have to get a seperate player.

don't be dumb. internet on a mac is fine. reading forums isn't a good way to judge: you only get the negative experiences. nobody posts to say 'oh how wonderful this is'.

It's a big part of it, sexy.

(A Maclot saying "speed isn't everything", shocking! )

Also having all the neat little players for stupid web media formats helps.

For instance: The devilspawn that is RealMedia.

Of course, I can't really contend with cogent arguments like: "OMG WINDOWS SI TEH LOSE!"

I think my questions have been fully answered here. I know that forums tend to be the place where we bear each others' burdens, feel each others' pain, and hear each other gripe. However, the comments about internet browsing etc. got my attention. I like sitting on my butt doing fantasy sports/research/e-mailing in my spare time and was somewhat concerned. I'll consider those concerns mostly unfounded and not worth the worry at this point.

that all depends on what you use the internet for doesn't it? For me web browsing is a small part of it all, and I really don't notice much of a difference between my Mac <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> , Linux box , or Win PC , so web browsing shouldn't be a concern.

If the dicussion is about setting up your computer for using the internet I find the Mac to be the most intuitive, but windows is fairly easy to set up also. Both require the same IP numbers, there aren't any differences between the computers in that reguard. Now in terms of pure internet speed, the mac has a better underlying TCP/IP stack then windows, even though they are both based on the BSD stack.

Now if what we are talking about is how well you can use the internet from the computer, with all of the Unix tools available in OS X it far surpasses Windows. Things like NFS and NIS are both part of the platform, not windows. Now if you need to log onto a Windows VPN, you will have to wait for Jaguar, 10.2, for that functionality. Another thing the Mac has going for it is how compatable it is with all the other OS' out there. Windows tries not to be, but that Mac works with everything.

And now on top of that, if you plan on doing any network programming, you have that for free on the Mac and not on Windows.

So anyway, IMO, the Mac wins hands down on the internet, especially since out of the box you can set it up to be a UNIX host running Telnet, a WebServer, SSH, a Mail Server, and any other thing you want. All things which I run from my own computer, so that I can log into it from any other computer. Now that you can not do with Windows unless you shell out a whole lot more money.

    Mac Better for internet!

    Just my thoughts.

Okay, I have not upgraded to XP at work, but in 2000 I know that it does not have, DNS server, Web Server, Mail Server, SSH server, or half the other utilities in Unix...

Now I suppose there are some GNU tools which can be d/led. So maybe it's not a lot of money, but it is definitely not ready out of the box.
