That's odd. Did you use the actuall installation CD, or did you boot off the LiveCD and use the automatic installer?
I downloaded several versions several times. I tried the graphical installer from teh live CD, which fails. I tried the "alternate" .iso which hangs in different stanges each time.
None of them leave me with a bootable disk. HOWEVER, it is possible that my optical drive beginning to die had something to do with it.
Can I do a network/online install? Or can I move the drive over to my powerbook and install it from there and then move it back to my desktop?
You can do the PowerBook thing and it will most likely work. Not sure if GRUB (the Boot Manager) will be able to tell the difference from your OS X installation in your PowerBook and the one in your desktop. But in any case, you can always click and hold Option to boot into your OS X installation when you're done with Linux.
Your drive dying may have actually hurt your installation as the Installer was probably unable to continuously read the CD and it most likely said "screw this, I can't read this CD reliably, let me just hang here and chill."
Try installing using your PowerBook and report back.
