iTunes 3
News.com has the following report:
-------------------------------------------------
Apple also is expected to announce a new version of the company's iTunes digital music software supporting new audio codecs that are part of MPEG-4. MPEG-4 is a successor to MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, technologies instrumental for delivering digital broadcast transmissions over cable, satellite and the Web. MPEG-2 also is the video standard adopted by Hollywood for DVDs. In addition, MPEG-4 is seen as a possible successor to MP3, the hugely popular audio format for compressing music digitally.
-------------------------------------------------
What other features are you hoping iTunes 3 will have? Audion is my mp3 player of choice, however, if the upcoming Audion 3.0 does not support MPEG-4, and thus AAC, I might have to switch to iTunes 3. In that case, I am hoping that iTunes will have a built-in soundwave editor so that one can delete gaps between songs.

Bets on how long it would take for WMA to be dropped like a rock?
Short of that, and more codecs, CPU usage is the big thing. I'd rather have a more CPU friendly iTunes than any new features any day... WinAMP on my old P3 uses less than 2% of resources (and can rip at 40x, but that's another frustration altogether... I simply hate using that box, though)
Sorry, but giving windows these things is a bad idea, THESE are the reasons why a Mac is so much better

I'd like I Tunes to get a wave editor with crossfades for making mix cd's. I'd also like a normalize feature to prevent huge volume swings from song to song and while we're at it a way to export playlist text to a pre formatted cd label.

You can change the volume of each song currently in iTunes. Also, I think there is an AppleScript to export playlists to CD labels using AppleWorks. If you're talking about the actual custom labels that go on CDs, Discus CD Labeling Software can import iTunes' exported lists.
Simple, I use a mac cause it's easier, ya know?
I appreciate the suggestion frawgz, but I want I Tunes to ask me something like, "Would you like to auto level selections"

Agreed... I have like 1200 songs. If I were to normalize the songs manually, that would take hours. Also, other songs have quiet parts and loud parts... I would like it if it could automatically make portions of the song louder and quieter, but this you would have to do on a per song basis and with more manual controls so your songs don't sound like on the radio when DJs talk over songs and the song gets quieter when they're talking. I hate radio sometimes

It's actually a very good idea. It's just a matter of do you dummy down their version, like frequently happens to Mac versions, or do you just charge them a fee for the equivalent of full mac functionality. Or just make it shareware that is free for a trial month then shuts itself off.
There is no reason not to release iTunes 3 for the PC it is just a matter of what Apple's goals are and how they decide to implement it exactly.

If the reports of bringing the iPod to Windows are true, Apple will probably just distribute iTunes 3 with it exclusively. That is, they may not have a free Windows download unless you buy an iPod (or pirate it from someone who did buy one).

Why go thru all that effort when they can just plug it into Media Player or Real Player?

I'm linking back to this thread intentionally...
Maybe the WIndows comaptible iPod could have firmware that played "Buy a Macintosh" about every 10-12 seconds.. in a almost inaudible voice.. sort of like planting a seed in the subconscious mind of the windows users. (or would that be unconscious)

So... we're talking about the creation of...
