Any Reason to Expect Updated Macbook?

My daughter is off to college in mid August. Is there any reason to expect a slight speed bump in the next 30 days for the Macbook? Would hate to buy now and then see the chip speed jump 10%.

Well, unless Apple decides to upgrade the MBP to offer up to 2.33 GHz, no.

At only two months old, I reckon it'll be a good few months before the next bump. Buy buy buy

Without a doubt the MB will get a speed bump to the top Yonah once the MBP goes Merom.

The MBP received a speed bump with the intro of the MB.

Can we finally get the entire line updated to Intel BEFORE all you iMac and MacBook knuckleheads demand yet another update to your already updated systems?

    Please?

Nope, I want to buy an iMac so I want another update out before I buy it.

All indications are that Merom will be released in August.

    1. The articles I've read specify a 20% speed increase, not 10%

    2. Merom will be 64 bit. Before anyone debates the importance of this (applications have to be re-written to take advantage of this, etc), Leopard will be fully 64 bit when it comes out.

    Wait until August.

No. It seems very likely that they would add such support. However, your assertion made it look like a fact, when it really isn't.

True. I think this is more than likely, though, and long overdue. We'll see in less than a month, I guess.

The original poster mentioned the Macbook, not MBP. MB will not be getting Meroms any time soon. Moreover, while the merom may be announced in August, Apple will likely not ship until September, meaning the clockspeed of MB's will not increase until around that time.

I say he should get a MB now, as it is not reasonable to suggest higher clockspeeds in the timeframe he requested advice on.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I noticed that MacMall is offering $100 rebates on all Macbooks good until August 13. As Apple never seems to allow anyone to sell goods for more than $5 off MSRP, I would assume this is a sanctioned rebate which MIGHT lead one to summize that inventory is being cleared for something new.

But then again, what do I know?

Just to let you know, the MacBook rebate on MacMall has been going on since it came out. Same with Amazon's $100 rebate. That is just something that MacMall does that says "hey look at me!!!"

Correct. This year's WWDC surprise is Leopard actually going straight to 128 bit. Vista doesn't stand a chance. VIVA APPLE!

Even if that *were* true, there would be no reason to make it 128 bit as the new processors will only be 64 bit.

Good point, however, Intel is planning to release upgrades across the processor line. The Macbooks will be upgraded as well. The crucial question is the time period, I guess.

I have seen a wide range of shipping dates for Merom. Some sources say end of July, some August. I think we'll see updates sooner rather than later. Remember, Apple isn't getting its chips from IBM/Moto anymore.

Looking forward to Tomster's thread several months from now on how he could have gotten a much faster computer for the same price he paid now. Just kidding, 1337 is right, get the MB now (unless you agree with anything I've said, that is )

Any sources suggesting Merom will ship in July are wrong. Intel is set to announce Merom alongside Conroe in late August. Which points to shipping in September. After which, Apple will up the clockspeed on MBs (Yonah) by a whopping 0.13 Ghz.
