I agree that the new Mac Pro line up leaves some customers unhappy. I'm not an iMac nor Mac Mini customer. I'm not a Pro, I'm a home user that wants an upgradable Mac. I was hoping I could get a Tower for around $1,200.00! Apple... WTF!!!!! Where's the consumer Tower?
It may be coming, or Apple may think that the market is too small. Apple thinks it can woo traditional PC users to the iMac and the Mini (for families and non-tech-inclined respectively). It would thus consider a tower to only bring the sales of gamers or enthusiasts, who tend to have low brand-loyalty, and want lots of 3rd party upgrades. Apple wants life-long cultists ^W users, and maybe it thinks the tower doesn't help it much, and just draws off other Mac sales. That seems illogical to me, but then again, I'm not a multi-billionaire like Jobs.

It's right there on the shelf next to the iPhone and xNewton. Seriously, it's in Apple's business interest, believe it or not, to not offer low level tower. It's how they keep good margins. YOu can either shell out for iMacs that have limited upgradeablility that allows them to manufacture them cheaper, or go high end and shell out the $$$. Is it ideal for every consumer? No. And nothing ever is. But you can't argue with their current business plan...

I agree with this in one sense. But I think because of Apple's small market share there is sizable enough demand for a lower end desktop that Apple is leaving good money on the table.
There is a large group of potential customers who cannot use the mini or iMac and don't need the Mac Pro.

I swear, this explanation should be made into a sticky or something.

And as the cube demonstrated; you might have a large group wanting an item, but it needs to be large enough to meet their mandate on profit margins. If you can't hit that mark, then the group isn't getting anything.
Apple ht this thing out of the park, IMO. Only thin gmissing is hardware RAID support, which is strange considering the four HD bays. Intel makes mobos that have RAID support, so I've no idear what Apple was thinking. But that is ONE oversight in a totally mind-blowing machine.
Apple did raise the price, but the value is still better than the previous towers. This leaves a gap in their lineup between iMac and Mac Pro, which will be good fodder for Future Hardware conjecture. All this means is that Apple has moved the towers into the upper workstation-class, with incredible power.

Exactly...and, like you said, this beast packs a lot of room for upgrades...
So people that want something cheaper...suck it up...buy the Mac Pro. It'll last you twice as long as a $1000-$1500 box and you can eventually swap faster Xeon chips...more memory...more storage space and add a Blu-Ray or an HD-DVD drive (for a total of 2 optical disc drives) when they're cheap enough.
I think mine will last me 5 years...I mean, come on, 4 processors running at 2.66 GHz with almost everything upgradable?
Yeah, seriously, this is going to be like owning a PC minus the ugly case and crappy OS. The single thing not upgradeable looks to be the mobo, and usually the only reason to change that is a shift in chip generations.
Kinda wanted Front Row, but it's kind of gimmicky and I doubt I would have really used it.
Front row isn't very useful unless you're a college student or live in a tiny, studio apartment in Manhattan. I have a TV and a stereo, and don't feel like running a cable through the wall from the study to the living room. The iPod is easy enough to transport.

Just wondering KKS, did you order one? They look pretty sweet.

That is just a consideration, as such, it's just a consideration. Get it? I'll say it again, it's just a consideration. I know it's hard to get this, but it's just a consideration. Apple can have a consumer tower and make money. Jeeezzz, the considerations that people hold on to can be annoying sometimes.
Some people don't need wireless technology built into a desktop. Notebook yes, desktop no. I have a logitech keyboard/mouse combo and that is the only wireless item. I have it wired into my network and a direct connection to my backup connection. Why would someone access their network wirelessly when they can do it over GigE? Bluetooth might be needed if you want to use keyboard/mightmouse, if you do, they buy it.
.
Security: Loads of companies do NOT want any unauthorised network access; the wireless if availible is sandboxed away from critical servers and desktops; if a desktop has wifi, it is easy to have a worker accedentaly turn it on and thus create a hole to your secure zone...IT guys basicly say "ship without wifi or we will buy from somewhere else..." that is hurting any chances the iMac may have had at making headway in the corprate space.
4. No Front Row and remote - yet again, a feature all other macs have, and I'd expect it to be available on the flagship, even if it isn't exactly for the core market.
It doesn't matter, because most users are going to want to use it for real work and
1) Don't care
2) The computer is tucked away somewhere and NOT on their desk and the IR Remote wouldn't see it anyways.
The thing has six different BTO video card options and he's still complaining about the video.
Hilarious.
Realistically it has three, one of which is worthless and one of which is out of the question/unnecessary for the majority of buyers. I wish they'd provide a 7800GT as well, that would be a good little brother to the X1900XT.

6? I thought it was just 7300GT, X1900XT, and Quadro...
I wouldn't count all those extra 7300GT configs - who uses 8 monitors anyways? most of us are still on one or two.
Hm....the reason I can think of not getting a MacPro is it's Rev A
If you ever get babies, don't ever tell your wife to get rid of the first one because it's a Rev A. Trust me.

Quad-coare, across the board?
Four internal HDs, hot swappable?
Two optical drive bays?
Mondo video card options?

I dunno, I have faith in Apple on this one.
