If not, then there wouldn't have been an XBox 360. (In fact, Sony loses way more money on all versions of Playstations than MS does on XBox. And that's including the Playstation 3's $500 price-tag! )

I'm not sure how MS plans to do this, but I think their plans to gain 15-20% of the market in a few years (as they said) isn't totally uneasonable. If they said it would happen in one holiday season, then they'd be insane!

And as for wireless capabilities, I'm sort of glad they are trying to allow people to buy songs wirelessly. MS doesn't have the usability skills to pull that off successfully.

MS has not made money on anything relating to the X Box. their game division has lost $1.2 billion a year since the X Box was introduced. this includes all games, accessories, on-line role playing, etc.

Except for the last 14 months, or so, sony has made large profits on everything relating the the PS 1 and 2. In fact, until that time, two thirds of Sony's profits were coming from the games division.

Please know the facts before attempting to report them.

Whoa, dude! No need to get hostile here. OK, so you say MS has lost tons of dough. That's true. But they are obviously getting cash from someplace (the games, yes?/no?) because if not, then why the heck would they cough up billions more to create ANOTHER one (as well as a portable one)? That's the major point I want to get across.

Neither you nor I know what really goes on at MS. Let's admit that up front. l All we know is what we've heard or been told for marketing purposes. But, they must be making money from someplace and everyone must admit that. (Just as when Sony said they lost hundreds on consoles of PS2; we knew they would get it back somehow, right?)

Example: Just imagine if Apple had $1.2 billion going out a year on iPods and nothing coming in, then we wouldn't be seeing iPods released each year, right? Same goes for any business. Something, somehow has to recoup the cost over time. Or else, there's no need to make it any longer.

toosday, did you read his post very closely? He said that includes all games, etc. His point is they are NOT getting cash from someplace, and continue to spend because they can afford to, and obviously they are determined to eventually make it profitable.

Whether this is true or not, I don't know, I haven't looked into it. But that's what he's saying, and you seemed to have totaly missed his point.

unless they want to lose billions

    They LOVE doing that!

I love how Apple has their own freakin army barracks in china to manufacture iPods by the millions.

    Good luck, M$!

It's not about hostility. It's about making statements that are incorrect. You're making assumptions rather than looking up the information first.

MS has stated their losses on their games division upfront. It's in their financial statements, and all over the web for years as well. The same for Sony. This has been the subject of many articles over the past few years in the financial press such as the WSJ, as well as the NYTimes. Not rumor sites.

    It's no secret.

So, yes we DO know what is going on inside MS. They are willing to lose billions on this because they believe, according to statements made by Ballmer, and others, over the years, that what they are doing, and what will grow from it, will be a central area of growth for the company. MS has never shyed from pouring megabucks down the hole if they felt that their long term strategy required it. That's what they are doing now. They are the only company that can afford to do that.

MS makes a vast profit on their OS and Office businesses. They make almost no profit on anything else they have gone into over the years. They take huge losses on the games division and large losses elsewhere. They have been criticized for this.

Sony made a great deal of profit on the PS1 and 2 games division. Only recently have they had losses.
