Well, let's not go pretending Microsoft gave Apple money out of the goodness of their heart, nor "to get the G3's out the door," that was a legal settlement.

    Hey Chev,

I didn't say they gave it them out "of the goodness of their heart", they received non-voting stock for it. Which is worth alot more today then it was then.

There was alot of articles in the SJ Mercury-News about it, but I don't have time this morning to look em up. The "out the door" theory came from them. I am sure we will never know this with any certainty so I apologize for and withdraw that assertion. Having lived about a mile from Apple's campus word on the street was the company was very near bankruptcy during this period due to mismanagement. When Apple bought NEXT in 96, the G3/UNIX combo was born and R&D began in Cupertino.

But here's the scoop according to CNET.
