Well, in order for your (admittedly clever) design to work, you would need something like this hastily done modification below:

The trick would be "syncronizing" the tab on both sides of the iMac and also building the right force into the tab so it doesn't slide under too little pressure. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Hmm.. well Michael, there are these little things called the laws of physics... but of course, they're just minor details in the grand scheme of things

god. Do not make me copy my post from the other mock-up thred here that explains and give a simple kindergardan example of how this could easly work.

Hold on one sec. Let me go copy and past. :sigh:

    Ok back. here you go.

I just typed this in the other thred.

"God. And you call your self a Mac user.If apple used this desing they would simply put a weight in the inside of it.

It would work sort of like this. If you have a jar on a table it will roll all over the palce. right? If you fill that jar half way up with sand it will not roll. Why? beacuse my friend gravity. You could now also push the jar and it would roll but right when you let go it would stop rolling. the same concept could be aplied on my iMac LCD."

    See told you

Hey robo, don't go buturing the kid's desing with all this physics crap!

Ah, No. I guess you wonder how a 300 person can make a rocking chair rock? That kinda happens with no "balance" gravity tends to pull things that are not "balanced" and they fall, or in this case, rock.

haha. I knew there were some true mac users on this board.

Um... it wasn't exactly a supportive post, Mike, sorry...

Kind of a good natured ribbing of your spelling, and neglect of the physics of the design...

No real offense of course buddy, it does have the cool factor down pat.

Why not just make it look like it would rock like a chair but make straight pieces that touch the desk for a good balance.

They'd probably have to do something like that otherwise I really don't see many other ways for them to make it not rock.

ok. I made a little digrame to help you guys see how this wold work. It is very simple.

You just showed how it WILL rock, LOL. See your little arrows? Those will want to be as close to the ground as possible because gravity pulls them. See your 3rd picture? See how the arrow is way up off the ground? Well, gravity will pull on that arrow. Your first picture is how it would sit normally in a static position.

Am I missing something? What are the arrows pointing to?

Michael, the fulcrum -- where the computer touches the desk -- is not under the sand in those examples. In order for it to stay put, the fulcrum must always touch the desk directly under the center of the sand's gravity. Keep working, it's a very good concept.

They are soppose to show balance because of the weighted base, lol, don't ask.

I was not really saying that if I were to make this I would put sand in it. I was just kind of showing the concept of how you could have a weight inside the computer that shifted to keep the imac balenced ocrding the the viewing angle you were at. As you can see I am not an engeneer. But I am sure if I was I would be able to make it work.

lol, yeah, that's what I figured but especially after seeing that I don't see how it's possible.

Maybe instead of having the round thing as a stand maybe put some kind of base or legs (it might not look as good, but it might be the only way to get it to stand right).

I think the "rocking chair" idea is OK, it just needs some sort of lock mechanism and/or a very specific profile. This is the kind of thing that physical models are better for -- or else buy a copy of a Robot. It can be done, has a useful purpose and would be intuitive for the user. then aagain, maybe the legs of the "rocking chair" are upside down: make the bottom where it touches the table flat and let the rest of the computer sit on tracks that let the whole thing -- except the legs -- swivel.
