In PDA mode most of the screen is used for data entry and display with just a few icons at the bottom. The screen can replicate any device virtually. Apple has been against integrating all of these features together because it tends to make things very complicated and cumbersome. This approach fixes that as you only see one "device" at a time.

Apple has been said to have been working on something bigger than the iPod for the past two years. I don't think we will see this next week but more likely in late October for the 5th anniversary of the iPod or in January at Macworld if it's not ready. Something big is coming and I think this is it.

As long as this "something big" is something small. If I'm going to replace my precious Nokia 6820 then it will only be with something as small or smaller. I don't need to carry my iPod everywhere, but my phone I do. In my pocket.

The smart phone could become the ultimate wireless computerless presentation tool at Universities, enterprise and domestic markets.

But for that it is required that Apple releases Mac OS X mobile for it.

Just make your Keynote or PowerPoint presentation on your Mac or Windows machine, move it to the smart phone and use it as a remote control to give your presentation.

I really hope they can get a lot of "desktop-like" OS in there! There certaintly is potential here! And think of eventuel upgrades in the years to come!

Another thing to note, if people see a mobile version of OS X and it works very well, and looks pretty cool, guess what type of computer they might want to purchase as their next one? Then nobody will doubt the halo-effect

Hey, this could definitely be something worth shouting about, especially if Apple pulls it off as well as we hope!

OS X on an all in one portable device... ***drool***

So what WAS all that hype about the Zune??? If these rumors are correct, that thing is going to get blown out of the water before it even hits the shelves.

if apple is indeed releasing a device it will be amazing, from these drawings there seems to be a few options - a UMPC style device (that will actually sell well unlike the windows ones) with a GSM/GPRS/3G/EDGE module in it for wireless communication and inbuilt GPS,

or an Apple PDA with a most awsome set of features, and if they choose to include a hard disk you people can have my palm lifedrive.

Or, an apple cell phone with a touch screen, but mainly a phone (like the SE p800/p900 - its a phone, with PDA bits) that will also include a lot of very nice features such as GPS. Although the 2 handed operation style suggests a device like the i-mate Jasjar or K-Jam

Another requirement is that hands and fingers used to illustrate how a patent works must be of non-human design. Alien hands with long ET fingers or simple claws are recommended. See past Apple patents for examples of this.

The potential of migration of existing apps by third party developers who already have some neat OS X apps is huge. Throw in a phone and a high resolution camera (feeding into iPhoto) brings the beast to life and will scare MS no end - their new MP3 player will die on the vine, or rather in warehouses.

I wouldn't be surprised to see APple actually come out with several versions - maybe with & without the phone feature, or a larger version that would be between a PDA size and a tablet.

Basically, the patent shows that a lot of things are possible and Steve J is going to be pushing hard to get the best of the optiosn to market.

Yes, Ken, this it the sort of thing that many of us have been hoping for. Something like the new almost aborted attempt of the PC world's Origami, except, hopefully, done properly by Apple.

Platinum, or silver. It's the most popular color for a cell. In combination with black. This is not so far out.

While white would likely be there because it is Apple's new "color". But, no matter how you slice it, black and some form of grey are by far the most popular colors, so it's a pretty good guess.

Dude, you're exactly right. All of these drawings are metaphors of what the software will handle: iPod, phone, gaming device, PDA, remote, garage door opener. This IS the gadget to end all gadgets. Wanna add new features? Upgrade your iGadget OS.

    Brilliant.

I'm always up for some bonus points, she was the little girl who sent a letter to apple about updates to the ipod and got a stern reply back from apple legal.

So how do i redeem these points.

in regrads to my oringial point, they could have used a sharp pencil.

Sorry, but the hell is up with new members using massive font sizes randomly? It's starting to look like a MS Word document in here. No taste. :P

I'll accept this filing of proof of the device when the device ships. Patent filings are often made for items that will never see the light of day.

To be honest, I don't even notice the text modifier stuff in the post creation page, though I do cringe at the results when someone plays with it too much.

They both are posting from accounts that have been around for a long time.
