Not quite sure I understand your question... but the answer is YES of course I have a DVD player... in fact I have amassed quite a collection of them over the past 8? years (whenever DVD made it's introduction).

Having a DVD player doesn't help me with what I want to do....

1 - Rip (non-lossy) my DVD collection 800+ movies (yes I'll need terabytes)

2a - Catalog ala iTunes the collection with things like movie ratings genre actors directors 'my personal rating 1 star to 5 star' etc etc etc

2b - Filter / search for movies based on the above meta info.

3 - Play the chosen DVD from the master bedroom, the den, the home theater, the guest room, the computer room, the kitchen, etc, etc, etc.

Somewhat (but not exactly) like what Apples iTV will do.

How does having a DVD player solve my needs/wants?

This is my issue with what I've seen of the iTV so far: It doesn't do anything that my AV set-up doesn't already do. With Comcast, I have HD, a great program guide, content, a DVR, a decent remote and movies on demand.

Even if iTV has movies in HD, Apple would have to come out with a good enough TV subscription service for me to justify dumping cable. Even then, there's the whole issue of live sports (which, I suppose, streaming would solve).

You are describing Apple's point exactly. It is NOT SUPPOSED TO REPLACE YOUR DVD PLAYER or your Comcast subscription! If they wanted to replace your DVD player, they would have put one in the iTV! (and they may eventually do that when BlueRay gets cheaper.)

iTV is all about how you get your computer media on the TV ... that's it!! Do you have anything on your computer that you'd like to see on your TV? Yes, or no? If "no" stop playing. If "yes," is it worth paying an extra $300 for the ease of use? If "no," stop playing. If "yes," get your credit card out.

Eventually there will be more stuff to pass through the thing and there is no doubt that a PVR thing that looks like a Mac Mini will be sold and then you can buy that too.

Not to get upset, but people keep making conflicts where they don't exist. Comcast vs. Apple. The industry wants you to buy Comcast AND TiVo AND iTV!
