That was before they started building them in China. Same reason Dell went down the tubes.
If you read posts over at Cnet, Dell gets flamed and told "Dell's are CRAP" every time someone asks if they should buy one. Lets hope that doesn't eventually happen to Apple. QC and reliabilitiy problems will surely drop a wet blanket on the bright outlook they're currently enjoying.
I was (and currently still am) intending on buying a 24" iMac (or a mid tower if one is available) after MWSF, as well as recommend a Macbook to my Mom for her first computer. But if I keep hearing Macs are still having this or that problem, I'll reconsider. I have a 6 year old Dell and (knocking on wood) have had zero hardware problems.
It isn't enough to put a lot of time into designing a great product if the manufacturer produces a bunch of defective units. Apple always has had great word of mouth advertising. That could turn against them if they aren't careful. I hope this all turns out to be a short lived and quickly isolated trend.
Apple outsources everything they make now, like other manufacturers. Im sure they choose the cheapest source. That leaves them open to poor quality. They still may be better than some other brands, but they arent as good as they used to be.
I thought I had a flawless 24" iMac until I read this post. I just turned my display brightness all the way down and guess what, I hear the whrrrrrrrr sound. When the brightness is all the way up (or close to it) I hear nothing.
I would have gotten a MacPro but the iMac all in one is a big lure for me on the clutter and compared to my 1st Gen. 20" iMac G5, this baby is dead silient. Or is that "was" dead silient.
Anyway, I am happy and don't seem to have a cracking popping sound on sleep but then again, this computer never sleeps. The screen turns off but that is it.
I am pushing this back to the top to get one more go at 24" users to see if this is another "mbp whining" issue. Some folks swear we are morons and we are hearing things, then Apple steps up months later and issues a fix.
It seems I am going to have to wait for Rev. B stuff because if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any at all with my last two Mac purchases. My only problem, I can't wait for Rev. B when I have made my mind up on a purcahse time / upgrade.
I haven't said anything to Apple as their solution would simply be to send it back and they'll give me another one - I am in a more fortunate position than some as I do not have the Brightness Whine issue, but do suffer from the crackling power unit and just a overactive fan in there... So, my solution is to wait for others to act...
In the mean time, it is certainly not dead quiet, the power unit crackles like pork skin in the oven when in Power Off mode and I suffer from now TWO stuck pixels!
I hoping that if enough people make Apple exchange their defective products until they get one without problems, it will cost them enough money to actually DO something about quality control so they ship fewer turkeys in the first place. I am speaking selfishly because I plan on buying my first Mac early next year and would hope they have got this QC problem behind them by then.

Oh, c'mon... don't you know everything is built in China.
sad but true

Thinking about this, this may be going back.
!BUMP!
My 2 footer hums as well.
Occasionally it seems to disappear but mostly it is a constant, low-pitched hum. Not very loud, but the only sound the machine makes at all.
