The past, as usual, is no guarantee for the future, but Apple in the past often updated laptops either in May or September.
Seeing that Santa Rosa is coming in Q2 and seeing that it took Apple 4 months to update the MBP to a Core 2 Duo processor (from the time they were introduced), it's probably safe to assume that the next MBP will come out next September rather than May.
Also don't forget there are a few other changes in the book:
- HDMI out (instead of DVI), with Apple likely a UDI variant
- eSATA out perhaps, instead of FireWire 400 port (as FireWire 800 is backwards compatible)
- Blueray or HD DVD drive
- Much higher res screen (now that Leopard introduces support for resolution independence)
- support for more than 3GB RAM (with 4GB seeming to be a sweetspot for OS X, 4GB would be nice)
How many of these do you need?
How badly do you need them to be willing to wait until September?
The FSB in Santa Rosa is 800 MHz (200 quad pumped) instead of 667 MHz (167 quad pumped) in the current mobile chip set. Given that the highest Merom today is using a 14x multiplier to get to 2.33 GHz, if Intel keeps that same multiplier we will get a 2.8 GHz Merom for Santa Rosa. Yummy!!

This wasn't only Apple.
Intel was slow to ramp Merom which limited supply.
Most everyone else launched Merom laptops around the same time as Apple.
Well I'm completely underwhelmed by today's upgrade. I wasn't expecting a case redesign, but I at least wanted magnetic latches and an easy access HD. What the hell is the point of putting a new processor in a computer if Apple wants to leave a 18 MONTH OLD graphics card in there. The X1600 just can't hack it with new games, I was at least hoping for an x1650 that would be able to run at the proper clock speed. I can't believe I'm going to have to wait till March-April, but it's going to be very worth it with all the enhancements Santa Rosa will bring. I've been waiting for an appealing Apple laptop since the first days of G5 Powerbook talk, but nothing has been great enough to lure me away from my desktop.
Just thought you MAY want to know that the graphics was upgraded. From xlr8yourmac.com
"installed Boot Camp and Windows XP SP2, saw that the video card (mine has 128MB video RAM) is set to 419Mhz Core and 445Mhz memory - in the previous (15in) model it was about 300/300, which was pretty awful compared to other laptops using the x1600. (The 17in model was reported to have much higher X1600 clocks than the original 15in model, although he mentioned the speeds vary (system temperature control related I assume, as is the CPU speed.-Mike) This one runs Oblivion (Windows game) far better." That's a pretty significant upgrade for the 15". At least it's something.

Most probably as you hear more and more Leopard will be lunched by January(Macworld San Francisco) than I'm sure that together with the new 64-bit OSX we will see some great update for the MBP
I'm not sure what will be, the only thing I'm convinced is:

Not true. The mobile version of Core 2 Duo (Merom) were launched in the middle of September. The stationary version (Conroe), however, were launched in the middle of July, with availability middle-to-late August, IIRC.
I like the idea of Santa Rosa, especially if it comes with an improved airport setup. Would be happy with 2gig ram, CPUs around 2.5 Ghz, HD close to 200gigs, some flash memory for instant on, battery life for 3 hours and a hi res 17 inch screen.
I really don't see Santa Rosa-based MacBook Pros being released until at least mid-2007, as Santa Rosa won't be released until April 2007(1), probably with the same speeds. Do computer A-list manufacturers overclock chips?
However, according to a processor report(2), the faster Penryn chips on the roadmap don't appear to come out until Q4 2007, so that would mean MacWorld 2008 for a possible 3GHz MacBook Pro (or whatever they'll call it then).
This is of course all my speculation based on what little information I have.
Comments
1) When is the Santa Rosa going to production?
2) Anybody hear if Apple is going to increase the pixel per inch density on the macbook pro screens?

Santa rosa will be available in Q2-2007 .. which means that apple won't upgrade MBP untill maybe june.
giving enough time between the updates. i think it would be reasonable to release an upgrade after 7 months.

September?! Are you crazy? I want this baby next February! 8)

the release of santa rosa MBP would also bring a better graphics card, atleast 512mb VRAM for the high-end.

Here is the wikipedia article for you:

Essentially its faster and cooler etc, everything you'd generally expect from a new mobile chip.
sorry nvm....yahoo had no idea but wikipedia helped me out
