I still want a consumer-oriented MacBook with at least dedicated graphics as an option. Don't get me in the wrong way, I would never compare a Dell with a Mac directly, but I'm trying to see it the way some of my uninformed acquantances shop for computers.
After looking at Dell's line-up, though, I must say I'm interested in the fact that they even offer CDMA wireless functionality built-in as well as dedicated graphics on their consumer-oriented model.
Like I said, if I'm able to get ded. graphics and an express card slot on a MacBook, along with a bigger screen, for less than the cost of the 15" MBP, I'll be one very very happy Mac head.
You wont, Its called crippling and Apple has used this tactic for years to move people into the pro line. On the lower end Apple will hammer you, On the upper end they look good.

Buy an EOL 15" MBP and stop complaining.
If you stop wanting Apple to be what it isn't, you will be an instant very very happy MacHead.
Agreed, the refurb page on apple.com is now offering the MBP with Core Duos for $500-$700 less than they were Monday. Buy one of them and you've got you next-gen MacBook today, With MUCH better Graphics capabilties.

The problem is, they have nothing to push you to if you are set on iBook/MacBook size. They never had. So you end up getting hammered even if you were ready to pay. I ended up with an iBook because the 12" Powerbook simply didn't offer anything over it. My previous machine was a faster 15" PB, and the difference in portability and especially the usability difference sitting on a cramped bus/plane/car/auditorium seat was huge.
Oh, and I don't actually agree with the "getting hammered" thing. Even if graphics have been second-rate on the iBook/MacBook, they have been great deals. It was a bit stupid though that they had to cripple the iBook by not giving it DVI. Could have made an extra $20 off that, selling the adapter separately, and pleasing a lot of customers including me.
a minor speed bump (even if its not to a C2D) is eminent in my opinon. also superdrive standard might be in the cards. i just want some sort of update so i feel safe getting one because i gave my last one to my dad. the MBPs look really good, but i dont want to spend that kind of money for a machine who's power is a bit much for me. i love the aluminum case, and the nice graphics card makes os x look much better than on a MB
This is something that just needs to happen soon in order to stay competitive. There's little reason not to do it.
Competitive with what? You can't sell more than you can built and while there are plenty Core2Duo processors, the higher end (2.0Ghz/2.16Ghz/2.33Ghz) are in very high demand. That's the main reason.
If the rest of the industry puts Core 2 Duo chips in their lower cost notebooks and Apple doesn't move the MacBooks in the same direction, it's not very competitive. It seems like this is happening right now while we wait...
actually, its the lack of the HD and memory upgrades that have opened up a huge gap between the macbook and macbook pro. Go and outfit a MB with what you get on the low end macbook pro and they almost cost the same.
i take this as evidence that apple will update the macbooks maybe this coming week.
I'm not gung ho about laptop graphics anymore, but I do wonder about the CPU/GPU balance in the Macbooks.
In the Macbook the processor is the part least in need of improvement. There is no perceptible difference between a 1.8GHz dualcore and a 2.0GHz dualcore. Both are overpowered for everyday use. Still, I'd bet money on that they are both going to be speedbumped and bumped to Core 2 shortly.
There is a massive difference between integrated crap and X1300 class graphics, the difference being, the other can be used for gaming, running Motion, etc. while the other cannot. Cost difference is $30, max. I'd pay it even if I planned on desktop use only, just to speed up Core ??? architecture. Why, why do they cripple this great machine so? There are tons of people in the world who'd like to play a little Sims, a little WoW, a little strategy games - casual gaming. Integrated graphics cannot really handle this.
It's possible for the Intel GMA 950 integrated to get switched to GMA x3000 integrated, but it'll still lose horribly to a $30 dedicated part from either ATi or nVidia.

That's rough. I was hoping November, I could maybe even hold on until the beginning of December.

Seeing as the MacBook is the best selling computer Apple makes, doesn't seem many people agree with that crippled theory.
The MacBook makes Apple more profit than most of Dell's laptop line up makes them.

i think for the Macbook it will be the 2mb cache processors. with the option of having a 4mb cache for the high end.
So you believe they will remove the 2.0 GHz option for the Macbooks?

there is a 2.0ghz Core2Duo with 2mb cache.. and another with 4mb.
