I thought that the company Apple buys the CRTs for the iMacs from has ceased making them. Obviously Apple has some stock, but eventually they'll need to redesign the CRT iMac for a new display tube (foolish for an item that'll EOL in a year) or discontinue it. I'm not disagreeing that a $799 iMac is a good idea for keeping market share in education (or that $599 unit wouldn't be a positive brainstorm), it's just my understanding Apple can't just keep cranking out the current iMac forever.

At the next rev they would probably be replaced. The overhead costs of starting the LCD production will be lower and it would make more sense to produce more LCDs.
Even if they had to put a smaller screen in there, they could get one down to $899 maybe even lower (note this is 6+ months from now)

[quote]I don't know much about graphics performance/chips. Is the GeForce 2 MX (or whatever it's called) a good chip?

It's old, it's slow.
Basically the bargin-basement nVidia chipset.
So, Apple will use it. It's not like they'd give the iMac something modern. The Rage 128 was a sad joke even when it was introduced in 1999. Yet, Apple still uses it.
if there is an educational iMac with a CRT (and there better be or else they will loose what little they have) then it will not be widely advertized...and avalable only to schools and educators)...just like their current (until Jan 7) 533hz tower
I believe that apple will stick with some CRT based iMacs for the education market only (and as mentioned before, kept on the down low). One problem that I forsee with the new iMac is that it cannot possibly be as sturdy as the old (current) iMac design. Hard plastic egg vs. LCD+swivel arm? I imagine that in middle schools, elementary schools lab computers take a bit of abuse. Hell, at my college I know that people aren't especially careful with lab computers because, "hey, it's not mine..." Just my two cents.
As for the new design, I'm hesitant, however I'm reserving judgement until I hear SJ give the spiel and also see one for myself. I remember being appalled at the iPod until I heard it was bootable... and then saw the perfectly designed little toy myself.

What was I thinking?
Here:
$1299.00, 1599.00, 1899.00
600, 700, 800 GHZ G3
20, 25, 30 GB HD's
128, 128, 256 MB ram
Rage 128 Super Turbo SE graphics
14.1" LCD (CRT on lowend)
Thanks for putting some sense in me.

Maybe a Rage 128 Ultra Super Turbo SE+ if we are lucky...
What does the iMac currently have and why does it suck?

HEHEEH (P.S>, why dont we have a laughing smily?)

The iMac currently has the 16MB Rage 128 Ultra. It sucks because the Rage 128 is years old and it's been outdated for a long time already.

if it's running at 800 gigahertz...
sorry - couldn't resist.

533hz? No wonder they aren't advertising it all over the place...
