Apple will want as many people as possible to have both iPod & iPhone - if they do a 100GB v iPod with the multitouch screen & the 8GB iPhone I will get both - iPhone for every day use & the iPod for hols, times when I want to watch/listen to more music...

    Double winner.

An iPhone nano is the slightly more tricky one for apple - it will double for both the iPod & iPhone unless battery life is an issue - the iPod nano is vunerable, there is more room for the v iPod with an iPhone IMHO

I think there is a misunderstanding as if Apple specifically wants to move iPod users to the iPhone.

Apple still want's people to use their dedicated MP3-player.

Apple wants a new market to grow into.

Not a new market destroying an existing and highly profitable market.

The idea of a non-smart phone iPhone is compelling, but I doubt Apple will build a phone without the iPhone features. It's the software that makes the iPhone an iPhone.

The concept of rotating the phone to have a larger keyboard to type, as mentioned by Trendannoyer should also be used by the current iPhone. Maybe as an update.

I don't think they want iPod users to switch to the iPhone but if that's what users want Apple shouldn't be slow to repond to this IMO. Apple has technical superiority over current handset makers. That won't last forever (2 years is almost forever in technology). I hope they won't squander that advantage and get market share quickly. Why not release a smaller version with say a 2.5 inch screen, the video capabilities and the phone capabilities. Leave out the wifi feature. Price $199 (partially subsidized by the cell carrier).

I'm not so sure. We have seen the future and it is the iPhone. The major difference between smart phones and "dumb phones" is not intelligence or function, but physical features such as geometric dimensions and QWERTY keyboards. They all feature downloadable software, crappy little "web browsers," email, etc. The only thing that the dumb phones can't do is run PC-like productivity apps. What would you remove from the iPhone to make a dumb version of it? I really don't see a role for the traditional cellphone in this new Universe.
