That's what I was thinking with running windows. I was hoping Apple had come up with some miracle to prevent Windows virus' in whole.
Thanks for clearing things up with Adobe, I wasn't quite sure how that worked.

Not in a big rush\ I've been wanting an Apple for years ;-) I'm not in a huge rush, I just want to make sure my laptop doesn't die between now and then. Does anyone have any links to more info on Leopard? I would like to see what the main differences will be and such. Also, with Apple, do you have as many problems with a new operating system as with Windows? I've never purchased a new OS from Windows, I usually wait several months or even a year or more before buying because of all the bugs and problems. I'm not really sure how Apple deals with problems and fixes for this type thing. Do you expect the MBP to be the same price even with leopard?

Not sure what the state of n base stations is (well, there is the new Airport Extreme, of course), but you should consider getting one, since there's no point in throttling your potential wireless speeds.
Apparently the n functionality will be unlocked with a $5 (!) downloadable key. Yes, weird, Apple has their excuses, it's being discussed elsewhere.
I have a linksys 802.11g. Will I have problems getting it to work with it comes with N? I don't quite understand the downloadable key. I will probably get the airport base station down the road, but I'm not quite ready for it now and I am assuming it doesn't work with PCs (?)
I guess I don't pay that much attention, or don't really understand what the grain is. I use a laptop almost for all of my computing and than a bigger LCD when I use my desktop and don't really notice it. I plan to go to a local reseller to look at some, this weekend, possibly next to see them, so I guess I will have to compare then.

Not a problem with the Linksys, n is backwardly compatible. In fact, we would not even know that the newer machines had the newer cards except for some intrepid geek forensics, so I am comfortably connected with my state of the art MBP card to my old and busted router even now.
The download thing is to unlock the n goodness of these cards, which are currently running as if they were g.

As far as problems with new major releases, there tend to be a couple camps on this board.
With every major release, within the first week, there will be several threads talking about this or that bug or issue that they just CANNOT believe apple let out the door, and what the hell happened to apple's quality assurance, and why did those money grubbing bastards let it out the door before it was ready for prime time?
Then there is the camp that says, "hey, it works fine. why do you have your panties in a bunch?"
Personally, I tend to be in the camp that questions the bunchiness of people's panties.
Anyways, the point that I'm trying to make is that there will always be bugs, but in the grand scheme of things they're usually of the variety that don't significantly impact the vast majority of users.
Great, I was hoping I wouldn't need a new router. Then it isn't a big deal. I want to get an Airport Extreme, but want to wait till the pain from the MBP goes away
Leopard sounds great. I think I will try and wait it out I'd like to have the newest version available if I can. With Leopard, will any of the great features be lost from Tiger? Also, is Apple good for fixing the type problems you mentioned? Do they also offer updates like Windows does? I don't really remember anything like this with my old Mac.
A few more questions I came up with as well \
How is the sound quality? From what I have read from the MB, the sound quality isn't real good, and is less than expected. Is this true with pro as well? My laptop has JBL Pro speakers, I'm sure they aren't the best, but they seem OK to me.
Back to the issues of virus' (can you tell I use a PC?) I am always really careful when it comes to attachments and rarely open any. But I know that so many things can cause problems, i.e. videos online, pictures, etc. If an infected file is downloaded online what happens on a Mac? For example, I have used the Yahoo! Widget-like program before. I see that a lot of widgets are from users, so I've always been concerned to download them that they might be infected. I see that the Apple website has tons of downloads and some of them are also from users, is this something that I need to be worried about on a Mac, or how does that really work?
Tonight I was working on iTunes, and browsing the internet and it is running like a slug. Granted, I do have 15+ windows up, but boy am I ready to get that Mac

Updates are free and have been fairly frequent with Tiger. When I bought my MBP I think it shipped with 10.4.6. I know have 10.4.8. Two upgrades that frankly I can't tell any difference from. Installation is a breeze, much easier than windows. I usually avoided upgrades with windows living by the maxim 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', because it 's so darn hard to keep a windows machine happy. As far as waiting for Leopard, I'd just go ahead and get a Mac now. I waited for months for C2D MBPs and I wish I would have gotten my Mac sooner. I'm much happier with my MBP than any other pc I've owned. Besides Tiger is quite good. You don't see many complaints about Tiger now (first versions apparently had some bugs).

I like your thinking I guess the way I should look at it is that I plan to keep my MBP longer than my PCs, so, down the road when I want to upgrade, if I feel I need the additions of Leopard I can get it then.
I did like what I seen on the site, but would also like to get it now. I suppose if it comes out in April that wouldn't be so bad, but I'd hate to get it if does have a lot of bugs

I am so glad you have asked so many thoughful questions. I am also ready to join the apple family. It is lovely that some of the apple gang has shared so much information. I am looking at the imac 20" screen. The larger 24" is bigger than my home TV... I think I just heard the apple men groan . I'm ready to purchase now and begin a new pc life... Thanks to all.
whoa partner.. i think there are some things to consider before you take the plunge..
What are you going to use this for, a laptop or a desktop or both?
I would suggest this: a Macbook, upgrade to 2gb ram..
goto newegg.com or something and get a nice monitor (19in are selling for like $175)
now you have a macbook for like $1,300 and a 19 in monitor at home for ~$200 more.
if you really want to make it nice, I would get a new hard drive (7200 rpms) and a external HD enclosure.. put the 7200 rpm one in your Macbook and use the original as an external back up
speakers are easy to deal with, 50$ gets you ok computer speakers.. I stripped a headphone jack and some speaker wires and set it up so i can plug my computer into my stereo.
I believe adoby photo shop is really processor intensive, less so on graphics cards..
If you really want to do killer graphics.. i would get a desktop.. keep laptops small and portable.. unless you need to do it on the road.. seeing as its more of a hobby.. you dont need a MBP
I would suggest a Macbook with a external monitor.. You save some money and get a large display, then you can have dual monitors, one glossy and one matte, or 2 glossy
also, airport it just like a brand.. think of it like a linksys card.. they all essentially do the same thing.

This is an option. However, there are two problems for me. Since this will be like a desktop replacement (not literally but I will use it a lot) I would like to have a screen equal or bigger than my current 15.4" screen. Second, the MB does not come in an anti-glare screen. This is something that is really important to me 1). because I do work with photography and the colors aren't true on a gloss screen and 2). because my current workspace was kind of an after thought in my office. Therefore my environment is already not the best situation, so to have to move my laptop around in order to be able to properly on the screen would be a big problem for me. Also, I don't really have the space to have both a laptop and a screen (plus I would have to get an Apple Cinema screen if I went this route and then it isn't cheaper )

I know that with my PC laptop Adobe is really slow. Acrobat seems to be bad on any computer, and then photoshop runs slow, especially openening. It takes a little over a minute (approximately) to open. Once it is open it runs pretty good, but it can be slow to go from Adobe to IE, etc. I have know idea what the speed is of my current processor because it is an AMD and I never really understood them, it is the AMD Athlon 64 processor 3000+ Also, I am using Elements, which is like a beginner program, it is no where near the program as regular Photoshop.

I'm thinking of getting an iMac for my desktop as well. But at the moment I need a laptop, my poor little fellow is tired I realize the MBP is more than I need, but the screen size and the antiglare screen is what is making me head that way. Plus, I also feel that it will run faster and better for a longer period of time and I like that it offers the aluminum case.

Yeah, I know but I think it would only be right (hint, hint!!!) I'm kind of crazy like that though, I want everything match perfectly and look like it belongs together. Plus, that would be my excuse to get a Cinema display. I've wanted one for a long time, but never had a good excuse to get one!
So here it goes. I'm in need of a new laptop (possibly desktop more than like laptop) My current computer is about three years old. While it does run OK still, it is starting to do some weird things, so I want to be ready to go before it is too late. I got my first Apple computer when I was 4 or 5 years old, really don't remember much about that. Then I used PCs up until highschool where I used a mac for about 5 years. I loved it and really enjoyed most of what it had to offer. Even though it has been a few years since I last used a mac, I miss them and would like to go back. But, for the past 5 years or so I have been mostly using PCs (both HP and Compaq). Before I take the dive back to Apple, I have some questions. So here they go:
My friend, I just did exactly this. I gave up my PowerBook G3 back in 2001 and have finally (like last week) gotten a Mac again. I even sold my brand new fujitsu laptop to do so. I ended up buying a refurbished MBP 15" for $1349 or so through the Apple Store, and I am absolutely ecstatic about it. It is so relieving to finally be using a computer that doesn't crash constantly, that works the way I expect it to, and that keeps surprising me with cool stuff that I wasn't expecting (like minimized quicktime movies playing in miniature when pinned to the Dock).

Thanks for letting me know about your experience. That is just what I wanted to hear. Glad that you like your computer. Hopefully I will be able to say the same thing in the months to come

Go to Apple's website and look at the Leopard preview. Here's the link.

Nearly everyone expects Leopard to have more than this,( new GUI, resolution independence, something else?), but this much is known.
