The Waiting Game: Leopard MacBook Pro's
Hey,
I'm an entering college student looking for a new comp. My old powerbook (actually not so old if you think about it...lol) had a little bit of screen crunching and I'm currently using it tethered to a monitor. I'm still attached to the portability I once enjoyed, and have been tracking Leopard since I heard about it last Aug. I want to get a new macbook before I enter class (starts late Aug.) so I will be able to take the comp around campus, but at the same time I don't wanna buy too early and miss a possible update.
My question: Do you guys believe that apple will release a MacBook Pro with built-in Leopard between now and late August? Macbooks with 10.5? Ultraportables with 10.5? And if you think it will be ultraportables only (gettin off topic of the thread but what the heck...), do you think they will have comparable specs (processor, harddrive, space for ram, etc) to a MBpro or MB?
Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pros will be updated by the end of June, and yes, they will have Leopard.
That is the most boldly worded speculation I've ever seen.

Late August is a long way from now and you will most probably be lucky to have what you are waiting for. 8)
If you're not doing anything graphics/processing-intensive, one of the rumoured ultra-portables may be fine. I'm certainly considering swapping my MBP for such a notebook (should Apple ever release one) and an iMac.
PS
Singular: MacBook Pro.
Plural: MacBook Pros.
Where to use an apostrophe: "My MacBook Pro's fantastic!", "My MacBook Pro's battery melted." or "My MacBook Pro's been my main computer for a year now."
Same applies to PCs (the plural is not PC's).

Sorry to be a grammar nazi, but such errors make my eyes bleed
however, as someone said, whether we see a hardware update alongside this is another thing.
Mid- to late March:
- New Mac Pros, dual quad-core
- Adobe CS3
- Leopard
April:- NAB
- New Final Cut Pro 6
- Other pro apps
Mid- to late May:- New SR iMacs
- New SR MacBook Pros
June:- WWDC
- New 12" MBP ultralight
- New SR MacBooks
There could also be an updated iPod in there somewhere and a new version of the Mac mini.I don't think that's a prediction... rather, isn't that the way they've always done it? They don't sell their backstock of last-gen OS machines before they start pre-loading their stock with the new OS.
In other words, whenever Leopard comes out, your MBP will ship with it.
Right?

Right.
Any machine you buy in August will definitely have 10.5 on it.
And something would have to go very wrong for there not to be MacBook and MacBook Pro hardware updates before then. The next MacBook Pro update in particular should be good: Santa Rosa (new chipset that brings >3GB RAM capability, faster FSB and longer battery life) and L.E.D. backlighting (better colour, more even backlight and longer battery life).

I love how people assume these facts that Apple has not announced yet.

How long is it until the end of August? 6 months
How long ago was the MacBook Pro last updated? 4 months
Do you really think the MacBook Pro will go 10 months without being updated? The only speculative part of my post was that L.E.D. backlighting will make it into the next update, but given the fact that other manufacturers are already shipping laptops with L.E.D. backlighting, and I can't remember the last time AI stuck its neck out on a rumour and got it wrong, I think it's highly likely we'll see it in the next MBP update.
The Santa Rosa thing is also obvious going by information from Intel.

Hear hear! Well said, Mr. H.
But you know I really like this MBP, sure it would be nice to have a better video card but other than that it's awesome.
How long after purchase can you claim a free OS upgrade to Leopard?
My Dad's buying my Mum a MacBook for her birthday on March 6th.

It's usually just a couple of weeks. Your mum won't be getting a free upgrade.

Hmm, maybe I'll postpone the purchase.

You may need to delay it quite a bit.
Personally, I'm not expecting Leopard to be released until mid-June at the WWDC.
Others around here seem to be hoping for a mid-late April release.

I'd be really disappointed if Leopard were to ship as late as WWDC. Apple has too much hardware and software dependent upon it. If all that stuff were held up until mid-June, you'll see one heckuva fine buying opportunity for AAPL.
April is the only month that makes sense to me. 8)
