    Kolchak,

What, no comment on Bergermeister (aka The Thumbinator) and his speedy thumbs on the Sony Clie?

If you insist. People can get fairly quick at thumb typing because it's such a small keyboard, but it's not good for the thumbs, which were never intended to be used extensively. Google "Blackberry thumb" or "nintendonitis."

However, just sitting in the corner wouldn't work too well IMO, as then the user would have to be pretty careful while using the CD... would you go so far as to have it separable?

Put the drive in the far left or right corner, away from the hands. In fact, when you think about it, it can be even smaller. Imagine just a 2" long arm that swings out from the side of the laptop. The spindle is on the end. The laser assembly slides up and down the length of the arm. Total volume when not in use and folded against the side of the laptop: almost nothing. However, this would expose virtually all of the disk during use. I suppose a clever engineer could make some kind of guard that loops around the edge of the disc to protect against accidental contact.

Guess my hitch-hiking career is over...

    intendonitis...

I can easily palm a basketball, so typing on a regular keyboard in any "normal" fashion is rather uncomfortable (at best, so I resort to two-three fingers on each hand. The thumb board was far easier for me in that sense, and I survived without major injury.

Personally i really don't think apple will shoot for 2.2lb. Maybe 3.5 if we're really lucky but not holding my breath for that. Reason being i don't see them releasing a notebook with any less power than current models because they'd almost certainly be releasing it with leopard, that being the latest gen system i doubt they would want it to perform poorly on a brand new notebook.

The optical drive thing is a tossup, personally i'd rather have it external - i rarely use the thing anyway.
