First off, the history post by Frank 441 should be a sticky. Great overview of the rumor run.

Secondly, as for Apple rumor sites tanking I give you: Apple Recon RIP.

I don't know if it's the lawsuits that are killing the rumors, I think it's more like the premature announcements for products - iTV was announced 4 months ago and it's only now in production, iPhone was launched a while ago, but still isn't available, Leopard is about a year old now and still not available, and all the features are written up already for all 3 products on the Apple homepage. Intel was announced super early - there really aren't any big secrets yet, as Jobsy is taking a page from Microsoft and the video game industry with the whole announce, delay, delay, release thing. Hopefully he won't be as disappointed when the products finally arrive.

I just think that lately, as soon as Jobs knows what's next, he announces it at the next photo-op, so there isn't much time to publish the big rumors in advance, only little things like oooo a little "g" (or whatever) next to the network protocol!

The only rumor I saw this year was one talking about a 'multi-touch' device the day before MWSF Stevenote '07. It was (obviously) talking about the iPhone and nailed features that weren't publicly known until the Stevenote.

Are you sure about that? I thought that was on macrumors, reprinted from some other site that wasn't even really apple focused.

My memory is very hazy though.

I use to be a lurker in the early days, dial up connections, wife, kids and work made me that way. It wasn't till after SJ came back that the rumor mill really shifted into high gear. Then there were several posters like dorsal or something like that had really good info. I believe that the reason the rumors were of a better level was because Apple did not talk about new releases till they did release something. Those releases were also at MacWorld events. So for those few weeks before them all the sites went crazy. Now Apple releases info months in advance of the equipment.

It was a lot like kids and Christmas presents. If you knew about the present before you opened it you would be happy to get it. If you didn't have any idea what might be there, it just added to your excitement.

Or worse, maybe your rich uncle dropped a lot of hints about you getting some "real cool mp3" player. On Christmas day, finding out it's a Zune.

That's the risk of overhype we have been experiencing with some rumours these past few years. It's good to know, but people are ALWAYS disappointed (well some people) if it doesn't quite come out like they expect.

Yeah, where are all the pictures of the cube that better be coming?

The rules of rumors state that if you haven't heard anything in a while either they are good at keeping secrets or they haven't done anything worth talking about.

I think it was stupid of Apple to announce stuff so early. I don't want an iphone and I never will. The technology is the next gimmick in a phone just like ringtones. Multi-touch deserves better i.e in desktop screens.

Now we are on Intel, we know about hardware updates and we still wait months for them just like we did with the PPC whereas PC manufacturers still manage to come up with new models with cheaper prices and upgraded components.

There is a difference between fashionably late and just pissing everybody off. Adobe have already crossed that line and Apple are getting damn close to doing the same.

You know I bet that is why the rumors have died down. I also expect that a lot of the leaks are from between the time that he (now) chooses to announce it and when it is actually available, rather than before. So by announcing earlier he gets rid of leaks....

It was the "N" - the rumours about the hidden 802.11n features in all Core2Duo iMacs, MacBooks and MacBookPros. 8)

IMO Apple never really surprises anymore. Based on published rumors, I waited on the new Alum iMac to come out with the new iLife. I saw the new keyboard before the product was released. When it was announced it was exactly what I expected on the whole. The last thing that really surprised me was the overhaul to iMovie, yet the more I think about it there might even have been a vague rumor about that.

Perhaps the rumors lack concrete details these days but they still seem to fly. What has really changed is the twice a year MacWorld Blowouts where new products were announced. Now days Apple has a much more flexible release schedule and IMO that is better than all that "temporary insanity." Which often left you feeling underwhelmed when it was over.
