DEVELOPERS:: *SHOUT app IDEA!!

This is an App idea that would be a server/client Rendezvous message poster. The person posts a message on the server and all the clients connected to that server will show the message

The client can be set so it can not be quitted (like if it was a school environment).

So, anyone up for it?

    iStorm is a collaborative document creation application

    this is just a program where the server sends out a message to the clients and the clients update automatically

    iStorm relies on numerous people working on the same level of all being all to edit the document. It still is based upon the idea of server-client, but the clients have almost no say in the matter if they do not have an Admin password. This would be good for schools where an Admin can send out a post to all the clients that are connected to the Student server and the students can not quit the program or change the preferences

    iStorm is different and has many more features than this program needs. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    Looks like a good idea even if it has already been done!

    I was thinking a SourceForge.net project would do the trick, no? <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    Yes, try on sourceforge! The idea sounds ok, when your does exactly what you want it to do and is lighter than the other etc etc etc...

    Forget that "it has already been done" - they did chimera and there were already browsers...

    Those are my thoughts exactly, I signed up for a sourceforge last night, (under UNIX name shoutx), but nothing has happened yet. Takes two days, I hear

    I am a Cocoa developer who also does lots of web application developement. Explain to me how this idea is different than using iChat with a rendezvous buddy list? Also, the idea of not being able to quit the application is not logical.

    I am eager to help, though, if you can convince me it is worth my while? So explain away!

    -Chris

    &lt;edit&gt;Is the difference between this and iChat that this is a unilateral messenging service?&lt;/edit&gt;

    iChat is back and forth. Shout is one way. There is no buddy list on the clients. With iChat, you can not send out the same message to everyone without copy-and-past-ing. The reason why it could not be quitted is because if then someone who was on a computer would not get the message. This is good for maybe, say, an office where everyone would have to get the messages about a meeting, or at school where all the students would need to get a message about which printer can not be accessed.

    This is a good idea and I hope you decide to devote your time as a programmer to the project

    This is a good idea.

    I could see Department managers sending out messages to others about like "Meeting in 15 minutes"

    or teachers sending a message like "Time is up. Please stop typing and now and press "Enter"

    This really is just a simple app that utilizes the messaging system of Remote Desktop or Apple Network Assistant or Timbuktu but without the cost.

    The negatives? Could become a hacker tool,

    It's a good idea if it is cheap and could be installed on a alrge number of machines. Maybe $19 US for the server/admin app and unlimited clients with the ability to manage groups and lists. (i.e. send a message to just Ms Johnsons class, or just to Section 17 engineers etc etc.

    I think it should be free, free, Schools do not have money.. Free for Schools, Money for others.... Yeah, I was thinking that the Server could handle mutiple groups (some would need passwords, others not) and also there would be an initial message sent when the client starts up. It could be installed quickly because the client would be on a DMG, and there would be almost minimal set-up. It would look for a Rendezvous service that is preset within the client, so it does not matter if the IP changed ever.

    I do not see how this could become a haker tool if the only thing being sent would stay in the text area of the client

    I think I see what you guys are getting at.

    A few thoughts: 1. yes it should be free. 2. Will messages only be broadcasted from the server application or will privilagged clients also be able to broadcats? 3. Does this mean that groups would be broadcast groups--a way to only broadcast to a specific group of people? 4. How would passwords come into play since users never register with a server? If a user shouldn't be receiving a message then the admin running the server will just not broadcast it to them.

    Wait... Ideas formulating:

    The server is a background process run by a preference pane (though I must say I find preference panes a little intrusive). The preference pane sets an admin password which is used from within the client--any client--to broadcast messages and administrate the server.

    Thoughts?

    Free, only servers broadcast, passwords would be so there is less work of choosing who gets what if all the services are public, no background process, no preference pane... The admin password would be so the client could not quit, change which server it is connected to, or NOTHING, without having an admin password to that computer... please post at the shoutx.sourceforge.net forums please

    thanks you!
