Pretzels...

Can pretzels go bad? I ask because I'm gnawing some down in my office right now and I bet they've been here for a couple months now. Sealed up with a chip clip mind you! I'm just amazed that considering it's really toasted bread, there's no mold.

Anyway, anyone know what the life a healthy pretzel is?

The life of a healthy pretzel?

Um... from the moment that it's sealed inside of a bag at the factory to the moment it is taken out of that bag and placed inside a mouth, usually accompanied by a crunching sound.

With the lack of moisture and their salt content, I don't think they would go "bad", meaning spoiled, unless they got wet. However, they will most likely go stale some time after their expiration date.

some pretzels more than others. The thick Snyders pretzels stay good for awhile. There's a reason why pretzels accompany such otherr great foods as pickled eggs as standard pub fare.

for the record, pickled eggs and onions are awesome, and it's unfortunate that americans tend to be afraid of vinegar. And YES, I do love the pickled food duel in "The Ladies Man."

I hear that archeologists found pretzels in an ancient Egyptian tomb and they were still perfectly good!

    Nice.

Seriously, I think your main concern would be just that they went stale. I've never seen pretzels go bad. Hmm. Perhaps they are actually.... <dr. evil voice> unatural?</dr. evil voice>

That's why I love Shanghainese and Taiwanese food so much. And I hate white creamy salad dressings (though blue cheese is good), and go for vinaigrette or plain oil&vinegar every time.

    Pickled onions... yum!

    Oh... pretzels...

They'll go stale, but not bad. You'll never get sick from eating one. They just won't taste too good when they get old.

Eww... I *hate* Taiwanese food. Being stuck at Taiwan airport for like several hours and taking EVA Air and stuff..... Nasty.

I once found a case of beer that was five years old. It wasn't bad.

I can't say that I know much about the food they serve in these areas, but I'm still holding fast to my belief that, when it comes to vinegar usage, it's hard to surpass Northern Europe. Those dudes pickle everything, and I love them for it.

They can go stale but in my experience, yea experience, it takes a few years for that to happen and turn nasty. Different people have different tolerances, but I am usually more picky than the average Joe.

I don't mean to piss on the campfire, but I was aware all along that "1000 year old eggs" aren't really that old. If they were older than a few weeks old, there would be no real way to estimate inventory requirements, and, due to high demand vs supply, would cost a lot more than they do.

I cite Johnny Walker Blue Label as a reference, which is actually a century old (or so they claim).

it seems that every forum i'm involved in deteriorates into pretzel talk. haha, headfi just went that way when a discussion about 'you're welcome' was begun. and yes, they get soggy and un-appetizing and assuming enough water in the air, any bread stuff can go bad eventually. cheers
