It still amazes me they have to take the store down to update products. I'd get a bollocking from my clients if they had to take the ecommerce sites I do for them down to intro new stock.
I'm of the opinion that 'we'll be back soon...' is PURELY for our benefit. At one time it was kinda 'fun and exciting' but as the years go by it's getting rather childish and silly.

Agreed. The only positive thing it does is send us fans into a feverish frenzy.
they dont have to . . . you know that from your own experience and also that the mac pro suddenly appeared with the most recent update without a major downtime ( i think ) . plus there was also leaked page updates that hinted at that 8 core version in the UK without any store down time.
Its spin and hype, just to get the discussion going . . . and it works really well. There will be loads of people waiting for it to come back online and loads of folk who will immediatley plump down the money for the new kit . . . probably more so than just applying an update without any announcement.

I never uderstood why they need to take the store down before updating it. There are many big online stores that get updated without closing first. If anyone has a rational explanation I would like to hear it.

Explanation? Two words... Steve Jobs
Rational Explanation? Hmmmm lemme get back to you...
This is taking a very long time... better have lots of things to release to make up for all the time that we ave been prevented from surfing the store site .
They haven't released much of anything in a while, so, any chance they might be updating several lines at once?

If memory serves.... the time the store is down for updating (talking about non-keynote events especially) usually has little bearing on the amount of new product.
I remember one time the store was down (for quite some time) and when it finally did return it took people quite some time to figure out that the only change that could be noticed was something like the addition or removal of one specific configuration of the eMac... Maybe not the eMac but it was something (pretty minor) like that.
New MacBooks, folks! A small speed bump, more memory as standard, and bigger hard drives across the line. Still only three models, not five as rumoured. Everything else, says Apple, is just the "same lovable MacBook".

That suits me just fine.

Oh, how hilarious it would be if this was just routine maintenance.
Yeah when the store comes back online there would be a big banner that says, "Suckers!"

I am not, as you put it, "playing with you". Details of the updated MacBook line are available on Apple's updated product page.
