Apple said Tuesday that thirteen-time Grammy award winner Paul McCartney's new album, "Memory Almost Full" is available for digital pre-order beginning today exclusively on the iTunes Store.
iTunes customers pre-ordering the 13 track album in the US will receive the "Dance Tonight" music video when the album is delivered and the single "Ever Present Past", immediately upon pre-ordering the new album.Â* Additionally, Paul McCartney's full catalog of 25 solo albums will be available for the first time digitally on iTunes later this month.Â*
"Paul McCartney is one of the greatest musicians of all time, and we're extremely excited to offer his first digitally distributed album on iTunes," said Steve Jobs, AppleÂ?s CEO.
"Memory Almost Full", McCartney's latest solo album, will be publicly available for purchase on June 5th, 2007 and represents the first global release by Hear Music, the newly formed record label from Starbucks Entertainment and Concord Music Group.
iTunes customers in the US participating in the pre-sale will receive a free download of the music video for the album's opening track "Dance Tonight" which stars Natalie Portman and was directed by acclaimed director Michel Gondry. Outside North America, iTunes customers who pre-order the album will get an exclusive acoustic version of the single "Dance Tonight".Â*
The iTunes Store features the worldÂ?s largest catalog with over five million songs, 350 television shows and over 500 movies. The iTunes Store has sold over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over two million movies, making it the worldÂ?s most popular online music, TV and movie store.
iTunes says "Expected Release Date June 05, 2007." The Deluxe Version is $14.99 and has a handful of tracks that are not on the $9.99 version. There's no reference on the page to whether there will be DRM and non-DRM versions available, so still not sure how that's going to work.
I wondered whether there was any significance to "expected" release date, but the other pre-releases say the same thing.
Steve Jobs said in the EMI announcement that non-DRM tracks would come in May, so either it's not happening until June or it won't coincide with the McCartney album.
Also, WTF on the Beatles catalog? Surely, Apple would not bury the McCartney buzz by bringing out the Beatles catalog on the same day. Saving it for WWDC? Sounds about right.
Still, there are two more Tuesdays this month.....
I for one wouldn't order any music before I had listened to it somewhere first.

LOL! I did such a thing yesterday! I pre-ordered Strung Out's new album 'Blackhawks over Los Angelos' (with a free t-shirt). There are fans for some of these musicians to where you don't care how bad their music is, just having it is good. Though I have heard one of the songs off of it, seems like it has potential.

I mean the Macbook story is ripped PR copy, and this inside rumor of Paul McCartney is nothing more than an ad for a minimal story (uh.. how about the Beatles on iTMS any one?)

The new album is NOT on EMI (only the past catalog) but hopefully as an "Independent", HEAR MUSIC might offer DRM free. I however see no reason to download these as I would rather pay close to the exact same price to have physical CDs with packaging and no limitations plus superior fidelity.
