Hey, I'm willing to pay 2¢ for one! Who's with me?!?!
The $1200-1300 price point always seems to come up, and I'd agree with that. Most people don't need 4 PCI Express slots, or 18 cores, or a tower that could crush your cat if it toppled, or one taller then your desk. But a replaceable video card, hard drive bays out the wazoo (I'm tired of stacking a bunch of external drives on my desk), a Core 2 Duo chip. That's all we want.
Hell, if dell can do it for less then a grand, why can't Apple do it for $1299? (and I don't care, stick it in a crappy plastic case that looks like something from the mid-90's, because, unless you're one of those style-geeks who put their macs 'on display', most people never see their computer, let alone stare at it and go "Boy that looks nice!".
I would never put a computer on display, but as stated in a previous post, Towers are just damn ugly and I hate looking at them myself.
Seems like you wouldn't buy a mid-tower at $500 if it were available.
Why do you say that? Just because he's too money conscious to spend $$$$$ on a mac tower, or $$$ on an iMac which will need to get tossed if the monitor goes, or the monitor gets tossed because the mobo goes?
All he wants is a computer where, to him, has the features he wants (and not the features he doesn't want - like the built in screen) at a price that matches his need. Most people don't need, or can afford $2500 just to get a computer with a second hard disk bay, or a video card slot. But that's the only option apple affords its customers. So he, like many others, scrounge for older computers, buy used, etc, to get by until something comes along that suits their needs.
I, for example, saved up to get a PowerMac G5 2.3 tower a couple of years ago. Before that, my desktop was a Beige G3/266. Before that, it was a PowerMac 7100/66. And before that, a Classic II. All but the Classic II cost over $2000, which I still consider a large sum of money (maybe not to most mac users, who apparently are all independently wealthy and the price of Apple's offerings don't bother them). 5 years between desktops. And the biggest reason is the price.
BTW, I hope to see Apple take a big technological lead and offer up a 15" or 16" MacBook! Can you imagine it! A large-screen consumer laptop, for like $1300! Man, that would take the world by storm, because NO ONE is producing anything like that. Well, if by NO ONE, I mean every other computer manufacturer out there (and for less then a $1000)
What the hell is Apple thinking? Focusing on computers and their OS at their developer's conference? People don't expect to go to a developer's conference and hear about that kind of thing! The only reason people are going to this thing is because they're expecting to find a free iPhone under their seats at the keynote!
What's next. Apple going to a MacWorld conference and actually talking about the Macintosh?
Did you bother the read the post? Where does it state what Apple said it was going to do? Perhaps you best visit the Apples WWDC site before you crap on what Apple may do.
By the way, I am hoping that Jobs will focus on Leopard and gives us the lowdown on a whole pile of new Macs. Afterall, why the hell would we be developing anything if it weren't for all the great new things that we are hoping to come.
And your suggestion that we are investing in this endeavor simply to get a $500 freebe, is one the most insulting thing I ever heard.

Hey, Abster2core, take a chill pill, go on-line, and look up the word 'sarcasm'.
And while there are enough stupid people in the world to do just about anything, I would find it hard to believe that there's a large segment of the WWDC-going population who'd spend the $1500 necessary to get into WWDC just to get a $500 device (but, like I said, you never know with some people, esp. the way some Apple-fanboys start salivating at the thought of getting an iPhone 3 days before anyone else on a message board).
I've just bought a very nice 22-inch Fujitsu Siemens monitor and it's being driven by a G4 Mac mini, but I'd love to have a Mac with better graphics and more speed.
Also, 40GB is not a capacity that is available in flash, and might never be. As it is, it's simple powers of two, 16GB, 32GB and so far, the max is 64GB.
I wish notebook marketers would quit referring to the thickness dimension as "thin". Stupid psychological manipulation.
I guess you missed out on last days announcement of a 256 GB 2,5" flash drive.
I want a tower so I can have more upgrade flexability as I am a gamer. And the games I am playing now are available on the mac. It's nice to be able to swap out the video card.

We heard of new Mac Pro comming soon a couple months ago. It was even possible that they introduce them at the last MacWorld SF... but we got a phone. And now, 6 months later, still no Mac Pro love \

10 years on, i would take anything from Apple, it has been leap from 10 years back, i watched all the Mac world introduction from you tube about iMac G4, iMac G4 Flat Panel, iMac G5, Cube G4, Power Mac, Mac Pro, iPod ....
it is wonderful to live with 1GB/2GB of RAM and 120 GB HDD, so much has changed from the original iMac, if I wanted to see onething i wanted to see the redesigned iMac, will take everything else as a plus!
You're definately on the right track, but current tech warrants a pair of changes. First, the LV chips max out at 1.6ghz. Second, the flash drives are 32GB.
Analysts predict Apple to focus on Apple products at upcoming Apple developer conference
According to Wall Street analyst Phuc Yu, "inside sources" have informed him that Apple will focus exclusively on Apple products at its upcoming developers conference.
"These sources have confirmed that Apple will indeed focus on products like its Macintosh computer line, the iPod, the proposed iPhone, and Apple's upcoming revision to its operating system, codenamed Leopard," Yu stated in a recent conference call with reporters. Yu admitted being surprised that at a developers conference dedicated exclusively to Apple, CEO Steve Jobs would rather focus on Apple products in his keynote address, "rather than the Zune, Windows Vista and external hard drives from Iomega." Yu's sources also informed him that the Moscone Center features separate bathrooms for men and women, that water fountains do not contain Sprite™ and that the sky is blue.
Yu called these reports "unusual but definitely confirmed" and asked reporters to be on standby for "any further surprising developments."

There's a Core (1) Duo LV2500 with 1.83 GHz. The Core 2 Duo LVs max out at 1.5 GHz, for the L7400.

Oh, and I'm not an idiot. I'm a lou-zer! Man, you're really debasing the idiots out there by calling me one!

I guess you missed how they did not announce a price tag. Take a guess why.
There are so few video card upgrades that it isn't funny, and this was the case even when Apple had a $1500 tower.
Do they have to be mac specific cards? They can't use an off the shelf PCI-E card?
