The iMac G5 was launched at Apple Expo Paris IIRC. That's end of September this year...

Maybe that's the launch for Leopard too. Apple said 'October' but if they're aiming for the beginning of October it's possible they'll announce new machines including a new iMac in Paris shipping with Leopard a week or so later. I couldn't imagine Apple announcing new machines late September without Leopard installed.

I doubt we'll see anything released until next month, at the earliest. Apple wouldn't want anything taking the spotlight off the precious iPhone.

A special Apple event could be also a possibility in this case.

I agree with the no redesign without a special event so I am going with #1, the iMac keeping the current design, but getting Santa Rosa innards like the MacBook Pro got, but with 800MHz RAM. The redesign will come after Leopard is pre-installed and the Penryn (45nm) processors are available. Waiting for Leopard and Penryn, while not needed, will help give Steve his selling points like 2x, or better, speed improvements, uses less power, etc. There is an infoworld article that says Intel is working on a quad-core mobile processor that is supposed to come out in 2008, but it did not say when.

I think the Apple Expo (Paris) is where we will:

1 - find out the fate of the Mac mini

2 - update on iPhone (sales, 3rd party applications, etc.)

3 - iTunes and iPods updates with the Zune getting a mention

4 - Safari on Windows update

5 - see a demo of the new iWork suite which will be released the same time as the new iLife, which will get demonstrated at MWSF2008.

I Also believed this to be true at one time, however now think they both could come around the same time. Apple knew that most of the Mac faithful would say that they are putting a lot in to the iPhone. Also I believe that Apple knew that Leopard would be pushed back at MWSF07, adding more fuel to the fire that Apple was doing too much, and forgetting about things that they need to do. Lets face it though, their was no way to update the iMac line because Santa Rosa (a Motherboard from Intel) was still months away.

Well Santa Rosa is here and in the new MacBook Pro line. The question is why has the new iMacs not come out with this update, as the iMac and the MacBook Pro are a lot a like? and Why no new iMac at WWDC? I will tell you why I think the new iMac did not come at WWDC. Last year at WWDC apple gave us new MacPro line. However Apple for the most part don't show new hardware at this event. The new MacPros that came last year made the switch to Intel complete, this was a big thing that Steve Jobs wanted to show to the developers.

As far as the iMac coming out around the time of the iPhone, I think this is just what Apple may want to do. It seems that the the iPhone market and the iMac/Mac Mini market may over lap but are not the same. So new iMac around the time of the iPhone could do two things. First and less likely is so they can say "Like are new phone, we also have cool new consumer based computers, and hay they even got a cool new look". However more likely may this: "we know that not everyone will want a iPhone, but we have not forgotten about those who are looking for the a new computer, here is the new iMac with a new look"

Now I am not saying that the next iMac will be around the iPhone but don't rule it out.

I see the optimist in you speaking. However, let's see what we have here. By September, the iMac will be already one year old. One whole year without update, like in the dark Moto days. Somehow I doubt that Apple would leave it linger for so long. The update is already overdue, but you never know with Apple. Second, Apple said iPhone on June and it turned out to be June 29. This is not the first time. Now Apple says October for Leopard, guess what it will be.

I am not saying that Apple could not surprise us, but it is rather unlikely.

i like the idea of an iMac sooner than later. its like forcing people to make a choice when they didnt know they they had any choice to make!

the people saying 'gee, i might like to get one of those phones..' and those saying 'well i really would like a new computer' are now going to say 'which do i want most? a phone OR and computer...and while im thinking about it..why not BOTH?!'

i dont think a new iMac would hurt phone sales at all. it might create an urge to buy something Apple if not everything!

The reason the new iMac didn't come out at WWDC is because they weren't ready. There's a crap load of stuff to to when a new design comes out for a machine like this. Based on the buzz from the rumors and informants, it sounds like it is close to being here, but there are obviously more details that needed to be attended to.

I don't think Apple would launch even a computer within a week before, and a month after, the iPhone release, but only computers, so nothing on the portable front takes the attention away from the iPhone after all they've put into it. They want that thing to be the most talked about portable for the rest of the year. And that's what we'll get. iPhone, nothing more portable until MWSF. Then, the 6G iPod will come out.

I happen to think that June 29 might be a great day to introduce a new iMac. All eyes will be on Apple that day and their stores will be flooded with hopeful purchasers of iPhones. Why not introduce a new computer when you have the crowd there and their wallets are open?

Because Apple stage-manages its marketing carefully and knows not to step over one introduction with another. If they wanted to entice the iPhone-buying consumer they would simply have introduced the iMac along with the Macbook Pro.

I know I'm waiting for a new iMac. [twiddles thumbs] But I've been waiting since December...

The upside of waiting? I now can afford the 24" iMac , and if I purchase it in the summer, I will get a new iPod with my iMac.

I'm going to upset a few optimistic people and say there will be no new hardware on Friday. It'll be all about iPhone - anything would get lost behind the iPhone launch and wouldn't be noticed.

IMHO, if there is to be a whole new iMac it will be at a special event or in Paris. If it is Paris or later we may see a small speed bump within the next few weeks to keep it going until then.

A Paris launch, or thereabouts would tie in nicely with the Leopard launch. I can see a special event with the line 'Shipping October XXth, the same day as Leopard.'

Sorry guys. Incidentally, I'm sure a few Parisians are going to be a little annoyed with this thread title!

Only 13 months after the last one.

If the new iMac is to be Paris or later though, we may well see a speed bump soon though (Tuesday?) which keeps it well under 13 months.

My ancient G4 700MHz is really starting to show its age-

first I waited for WWDC '06.

Then I waited until MWSF '07

After that, I waited again until WWDC '07 (I was absolutely SURE they would update iMacs significantly, this time),

    yet still damn nothing.

Damn it Apple, is it too much to ask for a somewhat decent GPU and even I dare say a decent CPU ?! Here we go again, waiting...

Lets see - maybe even, luckily, the iMac line will be updated by WWDC '09

    Ptsh.
