Windows Mobile is a pretty tiny share of the overall market. If it becomes at all advantageous, MS will backstab... ahem, 'jump in and compete with' the WM phone makers too... especially considering that the appearance of a ZunePhone doesn't automatically mean that everyone else will stop making Windows Mobile phones. MS's former PFS parnters haven't stopped making PFS-compatible mp3 players since the Zune came out.

It all comes down to how well Windows Mobile competes using the hardware and designs that the incumbent phone makers are cranking out. If WM phones are playing 'New Jersey Generals' to the iPhone's 'Harlem Globetrotters', you'd think MS will jump in. Its not like WM is setting the world on fire, as is:

They've only got like 5% of the smartphone market, which itself is only a fraction of the overall cellphone market. Blah... :

With the smartphone market approximating 10% of all mobile phone sales, it amounts to roughly 100 million devices sold per year. Of those 100 million, Windows Mobile appears on 5.6%, or 5.6 million of them. So, in the 5 years that Windows Mobile has been around, it has barely cracked 0.6% of all mobile phone sales. Ballmer has a long, long way to go to reach his target of 60%.

In light of Windows Mobile's success, or lack thereof depending on your point of view, I'd say Ballmer doesn't have all that much to crow about.

I do think that Symbian is an exaggeration though. Most of their smartphones are pretty primitive, I'm not sure that I would consider them to be very "smart".

Also, that chart isn't over any time.

Ok guys, this is what we've all been waiting for. It, and it alone, will make the iPhone a success:

Feel free to look for one that is. I was more concerned with it being fairly recent.

Nits aside, its pretty clear that Windows Mobile's share of the smartphone market is small, and that its share of the overall cellphone market is puny.

Btw, already saw the thing about Playboy on iPhone. Sweet though.

Well, the marketshare of WinMobile isn't great, but the question is whether it is increasing, staying the same, or shrinking.

The marketshare of the Mac is also not great, but it's increasing. That's what matters.

Considering that WinMobile's share of the overall cellphone market is only 0.6%, I'm sure they'd love to trade marketshare numbers with the Mac.

Honestly Mel, I know what you're getting at, but WM is so small that even if its growing, its still a gnat. Its marketshare would have to be exploding for it to really be of note. I haven't heard anything along those lines.

Bear in mind that WM has been around for a looong time, and still hasn't done much.

    I agree with you.

All I'm saying is that MS has a history, unlike Apple's, that shows it can wait out its competitors. Apple will drop products with a snap of the fingers, like the Cube, if they aren't doing well. But, MS will hang in there.

Mobile is getting better all the time, as the Beatles said. From what I know, it is also growing. But, both it, and RIM, sell mostly to the corporate market, that limits its share. Apple is selling to the consumer market, which is much bigger. So is Symbian.

    That's the difference.

I do think that the iPhone will have more marketshare than it will have after just 6 months, possibly even in less time than that.

But, if Apple doesn't quickly bring down prices, the market will get to a certain point, and stay there, while Mobile will continue to slowly increase. If MS sees the consumer mobile market is becoming more important, they will market a version for that as well.

In the Times today, RIM had very good news, the consumer versions of their phones are selling VERY well.

Now the rumor from Job's lips is that we may see corporate needs taken care of with the iPhone after all, possibly at launch, or somewhat after.

They also need to fix several problems with the keyboard.

    So, we'll see what happens.
