Let's talk 6th Gen iPod

The 6th generation iPod is going to have a large touch-sensitive screen, that's for certain. The questions is, for me anyway, what will the device look like? In my mind Apple is looking at this device, and saying, this must look different to the iPhone. And I think I know how they will achieve that.

Will it have a similar screen to the iPhone? Yes. Will it have an aluminum back? Yes. Will it have a chrome frame? Likely, yes. Will it have a 'home' button? Very likely, yes. So how will this device look different to the iPhone then? I may be wrong, but I think I know how.

There's no need for an earpiece (a speaker to hear the person on the other end), it's not a phone. So why even include the top bezel, at all? Apple wont. Now I don't have photoshop or gimp etc. on this computer, so you'll have to take this design on concept. If you want to make a better mock-up than mine, using the same design, I welcome it.

Also, the corners should be more rounded than this--but you get the picture.

And yes, that is a WiFi signal.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure. I'd like it to have all these extras 'n' stuff, but it won't be substantially different from the iPhone unless it really looks different... a smaller screen? no home button? I've haven't really thought about this that much.

If anything, I think the screen will be bigger. This is a 4" screen. Likely though, the screen will be the same size as the iPhone. I don't think it will be smaller.

Oh Spam, I made the mock-up without a 'home' button too--just in case.

I was asked to remove the Hitler reference by a board member. I added it as to show I didn't arrange these iPods in this symbol on purpose. I did it cause they take up less space this way. It is also worth noting that Hitler stole this symbol from the scouts, it was a symbol of piece before he messed with it. The symbol is used in several cultures also and means several things. He was a bastard of a man anyway.

(I don't have the luxury of removing my reply from addabox's reply, he can only do that.)

I don't think the iPod will have the same interface as the iPhone. I figure it will have some similarities but will not have internet capabilities beyond music sharing. Apple will have to keep the iPhone's most attractive features to the iPhone for now... part of me doubts we will see a 6th generation iPod until 2008... or until mp3 market competitors make something iPhone-like.

I think Gruber put it best when he said:

"As for “rumors” that new iPods are scheduled to debut this fall, that’s sort of like predicting that Christmas is coming in December. In fact, it’s the same prediction – Apple has been rolling out new iPods a few months before Christmas every year, for the obvious reason that they sell tens of millions of them as Christmas gifts."

Yeah I know, that's the thing. Besides the phone part, what other things will Apple not put into the new iPod that are in the iPhone?

Here, I rounded out the edges some, and gave the screen a subtle, black frame.

Anyone want to try to do this mock-up in Photoshop with the proper chrome and more iPhone-like rounded corners?

I agree with the need for a home button, but it wouldn't be there taking up so much unessesary space, it would be on the top or side frame along with the hold button. In fact it could have 'sqeeze' type buttons for home.

Also a possibility, which is why I made them up without the 'home' button also. Though the click wheel did take up some space on the old iPods, and the iPhone has a 'home' button taking up space.

True, although the band at the bottom of the iPhone looks natural because it creates balance with the band at the top incorporating the speaker (the one you put to your ear when in a call).

This is an idea I have wrestled with ever since I started thinking about the design of these new iPods. In the end, it's my best guess that Apple will deliberately do this, as to give an completely transparent, visual differential between the new iPods and the iPhone.

However if Apple decides that the new iPods need the other bezel for holding-comfort, and better ergonomics in landscape mode, the may include either a blank, black bezel on the top, or a bezel with a speaker for audio. The old iPod didn't really have a top bezel, but then again, it was never required to be held in landscape more.

In the end Apple is going to be the one deciding what are the priorities here, but I think it's great we are having this conversation.

Indeed. I think there's nothing wrong with bouncing these kinds of ideas about.

The new top-of-the-line iPod should be an iPhone without the phone. In other words, do everything that the iPhone does (iTunes, video, email and internet over WiFi) but without the cellular network and AT&T charges.

And unlike the iPhone it needs full GPS capability on the google map! Showing current position and searching the database automatically on the current position is the killerapp for google map.

Agreed, iPhone owners will be pissed though.

i think itll look like the current ipod, except the whole thing will be a screen with the same about of border around the screen as there is now. would make sense, keeping the white, that apple uses to signify its a consumer product. just a thought

edit: oh yeh, would come in black as well
