The 4 GB issue should be fixed with the latest chipset, which Apple is certainly using if they're using the new Meroms.

I thought of that, but if part of Apple's aesthetic is to get rid of clutter, why not a full-sized one for the desk - which is where I currently use mine?

I am liking the specs more and more, and it seems like the middle model is a lot of bang for the buck, since both it and the 24 have the same GPU and ship with 1GB of RAM. I'll have to see what kind of outlandish price Apple asks for the upgrade to 2.8GHz on the 24.

That would be their new CRIPPLED bluetooth keyboard. Someone at Apple needs to be kicked in the balls several times for this one.

Because Apple moves significantly less volume than Dell or HP, they have to minimize the number of products they sell. If they sold two keyboards, they would have to keep both types in stock in their stores.

Also, the 2.8 GHz chip costs something like $500 extra (over the non-Extreme Meroms) in lots of 1000. So even if it costs $600 extra, it's not a ludicrous markup on Apple's end, but on Intel's. And technically, it's not really a mark-up, because mobile Core 2 Extremes probably have the lowest yields of the entire C2D line. To be able to hit 2.8 GHz at laptop energy/heat settings is something only a few chips per wafer could hit.

Low end is a much better deal, new 24" is inferior to old 24" in some respects. All in all, this update only widened the gap to the Mac Pro.

Whew! OK then. I thought the wired keyboard was molested. Although, I do like this for light browsing from the couch.

People need to be fired for that keyboard. The new bluetooth would be pretty great for a living room entertainment center machine, but it's pretty useless for desktops.

10 bucks says the new ipods go with the iphone design too.

Apple going from white to black? Apple's joining the darkside

Your terminology is wrong. Crippled in this sense would be having a numeric keyboard that doesn't work because Apple shut the features off. A keyboard that is going to sit on a desk doesn't necessarily need to be wireless. However if someone wants a keyboard that can move around then portability is more key than having a numeric keyboard. This is pretty much common sense. Kicking someone in the balls for employing common sense doesn't seem too fair.

Ben isn't that the point? Why would someone need a full size keyboard if they plan to carry it around?

Let me also posit this. If Apple were to create a nice compact tablet system. Would they use a full size keyboard or a small but still portable keyboard?

I think some of you aren't seeing the forest through the trees here.

i hate the chin, black border and big apple logo infront. Logo on the back is fine. But have to get used to it.

I like the cinema display design.

Um, then why not use a wired keyboard for a desktop? Then you get 2 USB ports. Moving it away from the desktop is the reason for the bluetooth KB.

Okay, this is the iMac i wanted to get. I'm not getting the 500GB HD on the 24" model or any extra options, but is the 2.8Ghz processor worth the 250$?

Okay, I'm going to address several gripes I have. Not with the iMac, but with it's critics here.

    1) I hope the next person to say "take off the chin" gets hit by a bus. All opinion aside, it's not possible, not yet. Take it from someone who has been knee-deep in the previous ones, some parts just can't reside behind an LCD.

    2) How the hell is this a step backwards? The old one is superior? Let me ask you, does a processor upgrade, including the move to Santa Rosa, a much better graphics card, AND a $200 price cut warrant a worse machine? I think these will be much better than the old onse. In the four hours since they were announced, I've fielded about 20 calls and 10 stop-buys for the new iMac. Trust me, if it was such a bad upgrade, it wouldn't be ready to sell this well.

    3) As for the wireless keyboard, lets see... there's only one reason to get a wireless keyboard for a desktop, and that's mobility. Now, a laptop can have a compact keyboard, but the wireless external can't? Bluetooth as your one-and-only keyboard is a horrible idea, anyway. Try to reset your PRAM with that one, buddy. Oops, I don't think so.

Compare the radeon HD2600 Pro to the GeForce 7600GT. It's a large leap backwards. They might end up being not all that much faster than the x1600 machines.

    And yet Sony managed it.

It hasn't been upgraded for what 10 months. People are desperate.

It's not such a bad upgrade, the price drop is good but clearly the design of the Cinema display is much better. When you look at the Mac lineup, the iMac sticks out like a sore thumb and now we're stuck with a glossy screen too.

It also makes you wonder if they can sell a 20" that cheap, how much cheaper could they have made a 17" model - maybe the same price as a Mini except with a good GPU.

Unfortunately, this keyboard lacks the one thing that would make it good in that situation: a built-in trackpad. If you're sitting on a couch, how are you supposed to use a mouse? It makes me and that Apple don't have a wireless keyboard with built-in trackpad.

Also, if backlighting is such a lovely thing in a portable, why not in a desktop keyboard too?

That's a good question. Velocity Micro has a keyboard with a backlit palmrest as standard and one with backlit keys as a $20 option.

Here's another thing that bugs me is I was quite happy to see the $1199 price tag because at the current exchange rate, that is £594 in the UK. Add VAT at 17.5% and you get £697 so why is the UK entry iMac at £799 and not £699? What's the extra £100 for?
