Updating it would make it smaller though, just like you want.

You can always put it under the table. That's what I do and I can't even notice is there.

Yes, the MacPro is big, I don't mind a future smaller version, I just hope they do not sacrifice the hard drive bays and the expandability because of that. That would be a shame.

The MacPro is not cheap but since is aimed at professionals that make a living using it you can recoup that cost pretty quickly.

Apple will drop the new Mac Pro in January, because by then we'll have had a GPU refresh, we'll have plenty of Penryn Xeon supplies, and it doesn't have to dominate MWSF. Here's how I see MWSF:

9:00 - Hi, thanks for coming.

9:05 - We sold a metric ass-ton of iPods this year.

    9:10 - Let's talk Macs

    9:12 - New Mac Pro dual-dual -> dual-quad

9:20 - New CE device - same genre as AppleTV (but not a new AppleTV)

    9:35 - New iPhone

10:00 - OMT: New MBPs shipping in Feb.

There's really no way a consumer computer is getting updated at MWSF, because the MacBook will have been updated in Sept-Nov, and the Mini is the red-headed stepchild.

Good for you. That's why Apple makes more than one computer. Enjoy an iMac. The Pro model Is obviously not for you, but it is best suited for some of us.

The Mac Pro is under powered, or under spec'd for many of us. It's not that it's too big, or too expensive for most of us. it's not as aggressive as it should be for a workstation for a lot a lot of us. I keep buying other workstations because of it, and so does most everybody else I know. I always wait to see what Apple decides to do year after year, but they never fail to disappoint. They get pretty damn close, and last year they almost had me, but graphics is always their downfall. Their is no upgrade path, and the path they have never starts at the top of the line anyway. Maybe if it did I would buy. Like last year. Sure there was no SLI which wasn't that big of a deal, but I assumed they would have had a driver for a Geforce 7950X2 so even if I bought the stock card from Apple, I would have had an upgrade path when I decided graphics were starting to bottleneck. Then they went EFI on us and blew that deal. They could have had platform parity. No freaking excuse for that shit.

The timing of the new MacBook Pros has nothing to do with Leopard and everything to do with Penryn.

Just read this over at the Inquirer.

Could it be that we will see new Mac Pros sooner rather than later???

OK, now with the rumors flying around about a September 5th rollout for some new iPods, I am wanting to change my vote (which was for January MacWorld).

I now think that Apple has a monthly schedule going from August through to November.
    • August: iMacs

    • September: iPods

    • October: Leopard

    • November: Mac Pros

One possible addition to the schedule would be to rollout a new XServe promoting the UNIX certification of Leopard.

Man, I hope this is right.

That article is interesting, but I don't know how it will effect Apple plans for coming generation products. If Apple is still in the planning stages of the Mac Pro and they were gong to use an incarnation of the Skulltrail board I think the prediction of MWSF may be a premature date. It may come even later.
