Real makes some of the most CPU-hogging, bloated, nasty-interfaced crapware I've ever seen. I'll be glad if no RealPlayer for OS X ever surfaces, because frankly it's an embarrassment, and as far as I've ever been concerned, unnecessary.
There are UNIX version out although I read somewhere else that those versions do not work properly on X. Maybe if someone could figure out how to make 'em work. Much obliged
Maybe its taking so long because they are working on a cocoa version? Hopefully they are working on something...

I got the change to chat with a real project mangeer the other day. I saked him about what real is doing of OS X. He said they are working on a CABROB version of there software and it should be out soon. He could not give me a date

My prediction: Real Player will be dead by this time next year. Why? Cause they suck. I hate to admit it by WMP is better. But nothing will come close to Quicktime quality...that rocks. But Real Player....Dead by the end of 2002.
What's CABROB? Is that a typo again?

carbon, it was a typo
I asked that project manneger what features Reall has that gives them an edge on there competitors, he said " Real bealives in suporting many diffent formats, making a 1 stop player for viewing and playing meida, that is why we biuld in quick time suport" I then asked him who he considers his bigest comeptitors, he said "definetly Windows Media Player" I saked so not quicktime? and he said " no quick time is more of a partner that we work with and suport"
Thr problem with Realplayer saying it 'suports Quicktime' is that it only suports a tiny part of what Quicktime is able to do. Full QT can do Flash 4>5, midi audio, Play 'fast start' movie files, play streamed movie files etc. while the only part of Quicktime Real is going to suport is the playing of QT vidio files, that have the .mov file type.

Shouldn't QT also be able to play real formats too now?

No. According to the agreement between Apple and Real. Real Player can play back QT file. But QuickTime player CANNOT play Real format. Real audio and video files are the proprietary format and have to be licenced by Real.
RealPlayer's interface (and who knows how much else) is done in Visual Basic. The engine is written in Visual C++. The Mac port is done with Microsoft's cross compiler, which is abominable, and then polished a little so that it actually runs. (Microsoft's native compilers are nothing to write home about, either...).
You'll see RealPlayer for OS X when MS gets their cross compiler to support OS X (in which case Real for X will continue to suck mightily) or if lightning strikes the company and they hire some actual Mac programmers to write the client.
Maybe we should start a petition to have Real contract out to OmniGroup?
I've contacted RealNetworks several times to harass them about this specific thing, even pulling the press card, and the employees there repeatedly amaze me with their complete lack of acknowledement of the difference between "native" and "runs in Classic."
Real isn't committed to the platform, and they're not really very interested in devoting sufficient resources to RealPlayerX that it's going to be finished anytime soon.
Count on it being a POS when it's released too; I doubt it'll be out even in the first six months of 2002, but I could be mistaken.
Windows Media Player for Mac OS X is actually good software. QuickTime generally gives me better quality, but on dialup I've noticed that WMP consistently delivers better quality than QuickTime. The beta I'm using doesn't come with a browser plugin, but the few WMP files I've downloaded and streamed over the internet have played well.
Microsoft did a good job with it; it'll be a valuable addition to OS X's growing software library.

and i am like, "I can see it, it is a real file."
and then they punch in my stomach, leaving me on the ground for the rabid rabbits
see what I mean?
Rather than wait for it to appear on OS X, why not ask the sites you visit that use Real video to offer other formats?

Also Real Player can't play QTVR files.
