    Oh! I got it to beep - I guess I wasn't holding down the power button long enough. I got a long, loud beep ... and then the gray apple again.



    But at least it beeped at me. That's a step in the right direction!

    Just to follow up ...



    Brought my mini to an authorized repair guy, and they found that my hard drive was bad and my OS was corrupt. I guess my MacGremlins were pretty ticked off -- but they're happy again, and back on the job. Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer.
