That said, I still stand by my suggestion that for most people it's probably in their best interest to wait the six weeks until MWSF. Buying now and trying to sell it on eBay once newer MBPs come out in January isn't sound financial advise because (a) of the difficulty in trying to recoup on purchase costs and (b) selling once new technology comes out becomes harder as more people tend to be interested in the newer products (i.e. why buy old technology when you can get newer tech for about the same price?).

I probably shouldn't have made the eBay suggestion, on second thought -- it seems to have led people astray. All I meant, and all my own example was meant to show, is that people who have work to do on their computer (any computer: laptop, desktop, whatever) should buy now if they really need it and get their work done. To me the work always takes precedent, and waiting for a possible future update/release doesn't get your work done. If you can wait, absolutely wait. Me, I'd rather have a new Mac NOW, then wait. But I'm impatient that way.

Agreed, if someone needs it now to work, then it seems there's no alternative but to buy now. For me, I can get by for six more weeks hoping that both new MacBook Pros and Mac Pros will be released at MWSF. Would I be happier having a new one now? Yes, but since I can wait a little bit, I would be more upset to realize that my impatience resulted in my missing out on some faster technology that will actually benefit me more down the road.

I too am hoping they upgrade at MWSF... just because I'm a MBP whore, and I love every iteration of them. Granted, I won't buy then as I'm happy with what I have, but a few months down the line if they upgrade and the bugs are shook out (if there are any), then I'll get it, no problem (say, May)... and be totally happy yet again. Somehow I'm more productive on a new computer (or a new monitor) -- don't know why. I mean, the new ones are faster, but it's the very newness itself that seems to inspire me.

I'm in the same boat as several people who have already posted about whether to purchase a macbook pro now or later. I would have to agree to some extent with both sides of the argument about buyers remorse vs. the "always waiting for the next upgrade" trap. So I have come to the resolution that I am going to wait until a set date (for me the end of MWSF) and then order it whether it has been upgraded or not. I think that this is the best solution to balance my need of the macbook pro and my desire to not feel stupid for buying a product at the end of its approximately 180 day product cycle (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/). Best of luck to everyone else struggling with whether to buy now or later, but either way its a macbook pro which is an incredible machine whether its the newest version or not.

Its been incredibly long since the last MacBook Pro update, offcourse they are going to release a new (speed bump penyrn) in January. If they wait till April-May to do that, it would be outdated. See, for me, I need one NOW for my Design program, but I can work on a PC temperarely for now so I can wait. I really expect a speed bump in January, and that is when I will get it. I predict that I am 101% this will happen.

I am in the market for a Macbook Pro as well. I am curious as to what updates will come MWSF. I know there is the much anticipated long overdue Mac Pro updates that are more than likely to come. As for the Macbook Pro I can only scratch my head and guess what ... or if any.

    I would love to see:

    >LED and get rid of the CCFLs (15" has it so why not 17"?)

    >2.8Ghz processor or HELL why not the new Penryn's? (anyone know cost differences and actual performance gains???)

Video card increase ... maybie NVIDIA GeForce 8600M 256mb GS or a bump to 512mb

I honestly don't see them updating the design. It's slim, light and very modern. They also seem to have worked out all the major bugs since it's redesign.

I am really debating if waiting for a MBP until January is worth it. The current model blows away the competition in my eyes. Any input would be great folks!

Penryn will have a new instruction set, SSE4. I do not know how or when you will see the benefits of SSE4, but at least it will help future-proof your computer by being there when you start using software that utilizes the instructions, or it will be a "plus" if you sell it.

No one knows what they will do. People think they might introduce the Macbook Slim, or whatever. I'll say what everyone else says. If you need it now, buy it now. If you can wait, wait. I'm kinda in the same boat.

    Ha!

Basically, Intel took a Powerbook, made it black on top and uglified slightly and loaded vista. the machine also exists in only prototype form and was first shown in 2005!

It is one thing to mock up a nice looking really thin laptop and quite another to manufacture working units.

The current Macbook Pro / Powerbook design is so good, I cannot see anything being better. Certainly nothing the PC world has come up with comes close.

CNet is even now putting out an article on how the MBP will take over laptops like iPod took over DMPs. A big part of that is the design. It is interesting how a design this old is just now gaining mass market attention. It is just truly that much ahead of its time, but is now coming into its own.

Less likely for there to be a MacBook update soon. The mid-2007 update was in May and the late-2007 update just happened at the beginning of November (a move to the Santa Rosa architecture and inclusion of Intel X3100 onboard GPU)... so it's less likely for there to be any significant changes to the MacBook soon. It's more likely that the MacBook Pro will see an update in January.

As Fishyesque said, if you need it now, buy now.

    the best advice IMO

They are pretty good at keeping track of timing but you can't base it on timing alone. The Macbook Pro may be at the end of its update cycle but if there's nothing to update them with for another two months as in this case then the product cycle becomes irrelevant.

I actually think the MBP update has already happened - they bumped the processors up when the Santa Rosa Macbooks came out. This would mean that the next update is 6 months from that time, which is actually pretty close to Montevina i.e no Penryn mobiles until March or so.

another thing. i don't need it right now. but i really want my first mac. and lets say they come out with some type of super slim MBP or something... that'll make the macbook cheaper right? so then i should wait?

Not necessarily, there is a gap between the highest MB and lowest MBP. It's also unlikely that Apple would lower the price of the MB now it has Santa Rosa.

    £699,£829,£949,<£1099>,£1299,£1599,£1799

If the new model is as reported - a slim Macbook Pro - then that's the perfect place for it and it wouldn't affect any of the prices.

It's a cut down pro model so should be the cheapest in that lineup but it's still a pro model so should be higher than the MB. If it uses high capacity flash components then the higher price will be justified.

I've got a variation on the question of whether to buy now or not. The current specs of the current MBP suit me fine, and I'm happy cruising along on my 12" for the next few months. So my question is, if there is an updated MBP in January (?) historically, what effect has it had on the "previous" model price?

I've bought a few, well, PowerBooks, in previous years, but without thinking of the timing. So I thought with MW coming up, if I wait, will I see a drop in price of the current model at resellers, or will I just watch them drop OFF, and have to buy a power bump and price bump that I don't really need? Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry - posted before I read the full page, and saw my question dealt with before. Any additional comments would be appreciated, but don't worry, I already feel the shame...

Now if you are like me, then you'll need to buy now, so you can write it off on this years taxes.

And yes, then kick yourself in the ass when they announce something, better / faster / cooler sometime in January

    Skip
