(Turns out my wireless bluetooth keyboard had managed to turn itself back on, and a key was being mashed down! This never even crossed my mind, since it's in storage in another room.)
Someone at my work was just dealing with the same issue, so I wanted to reply to let you know how we fixed it, in case anyone comes across this thread again.
Apparently there was a wireless keyboard that was believed to be dead in the area. Something was leaning against the \ key, and thus, the repeating keystroke.
