Like I said, "Pro Tools Free". It's the free hardware independant version - only does 8 tracks of audio and 32 tracks of MIDI (I think), but it's got a bunch of good-quality audio plugins and it's great for demoing songs on a tight budget - you can get a pretty good-quality track out of it, for nothing.
In that case, you're right. Since it's free, it's the undisputed price/performance champ.
Actually, since we're in the oSX area, it could be argued that Pro Tools performance in OSX (or lack thereof) makes its price/performance ratio infinitely poor!
