Heh...and I just bought an airport extreme last week because my router died. dumbass.

Fortunately I can just move it upstairs if I want one of these things and the extreme as a bridge since my MBP doesn't actually have N support (it's old).

Not from CompUSA. RIP. But like I said, I would like one upstairs anyway. I've got too many things that are still 802.11B or G without WPA (or just ethernet) that having an extreme upstairs was always part of the plan anyway.

I'll just dump my G bridge a little sooner.

Do we know if Time Machine/Time Capsule be used to backup to a disk connected to an Airport Extreme base station?

This may be a dumb question... but how do you know if your computer can support 'n'? And not 'g'?

Is the "server grade" disk really the reason, or can they not overcome the problem of Time Machine backing up wirelessly to any old NAS?

Do you think we can partition the time capsule drive so not all of it is used for time machine?

    The extreme is b/g/n compliant.

He'll have to buy a 32bit 802.11n card for that older laptop.

I just got a Dlink Extreme N router a couple of months ago...wondering if the Time Capsule will act as a bridge for downstairs?

use spotlight... type in "network utility" once it opens, the info tab has a drop-down menu, go to "Network Interface (en1)" now look at the bottom of the left column.

I would assume that if you can use it as a server then you should be able to make folders on it and view it in Finder as another disk... and be able to send files to it for others in the hosue to grab. It's not just for backing up Time Machine is it? Because then it would be pretty useless for my needs.

I expect that after the release of the Time Capsule Apple will release a software update for the current base station to allow wireless Time Machine backup. Remember: this feature was in the last Leopard builds but was dropped due to bugs!

    Why Time Capsule then? Because:
    1. Apple wants to make profit on the hard drives as well.

    2. Most current external HD are large and noisy or too expensive. Apple's package is very elegant, compact and competitively priced! I have an external 1TB LaCie drive. It was more expensive than the whole Capsule when I bough it. May be it is cheaper now but I would pay a premium for a smaller, quieter package.

Will other PC's on the network be able to read from it? Will a PS3 on the network be able to read from it?

I haven't seen any evidence that it can be used as a server, but I'd hope that would be possible.

[edit]Well I take that back. Now AppleInsider is reporting that "The Mac maker also says the drive works as a standard NAS drive."

I'd like to know the spec's and maker of the HDD and when the drive dies is this unit a throw away or can the HDD be replaced?

So is using this in an apartment building like hanging a "Please Hack Me" sign out for the neighbours?

I know 802.11n is encrypted. But the paranoid part of me says attaching a hard drive by a cable once a day is not a huge imposition.

It would be nice if they updated AES/TimeMachine to allows Airport disks to be used with TM, but I don't think they will any time soon. That feature was canceled, but necessarily because of bugs. It could be just because they decided that TimeCapsule was a better way to monetize the feature.

Not one of the external drives I use is loud and I don't expect the drive Apple is using to be any cheaper.

I really want them to update TimeMachine to use Airport Disks...it just makes more sense. I can upgrade to a larger disk as they get cheaper, I can choose the specs and I can plug it directly into my MPB when I need better speed.

In anycase, I hope the have improve the copying of files with TimeCapsule over Airport Disks. I I copy anything over a couple gigs the transfer almost always fails.

Holy crap. It's $100 cheaper than the 1 TB G-Drive I bought a few days ago AND it's an Airport extreme. That G-Drive shit is so going back to the store.

That's a very misleading statement. There are many "Extreme" branded Airport products that are not draft 802.11n. Many are 802.11b/g only i.e:

    - The Airport Extreme card

    - The first three of the five different Airport Extreme Base Stations.

Does your GDrive have FW800? I would debate that return
